Hi everyone,

Good news - under AlbertaBC reciprical billing agreement one can get reffered to the AB weight wise program and get banded - and not py - however there is a two year wait list.

I feel like I can't wait anymore - one year already! but one year left :(  I want to go to Mexico to get it done - any recommendations?  what about follow-up and fills.

Any one ever been successful in getting this procedure paid for?

I had my surgery RNY done in Monterrey Mexico
Medical doesn't recognize Mexico for any type of WLS surgery.
It is strictly self pay

If you would have self paid in Canda would it have been covered?  What was your experience like in Mexico?

I have not heard about anyone getting the lapband paid for but I know last year Alberta health care paid for 100 lapband surgeries as a test.

Could you elaborate more on this??? I would like to share this info with all the 700 members on
Dr. Amson's website on victoriabariatricsurgery.com.

Before my WLS in Seattle in June 2007, I was on the waitlist for the Weight Wise program in Edmonton and they told me it was a long wait but that Alberta Health Care would pay for the RNY except for the travelling expenses, etc. I am not sure if they still offer that to non Alberta residents or not? I could not wait for Dr. Amson any longer but I was given a gift of having the WLS out of country paid for.

I look forward to hearing more about this so it means hope and options for others who are waiting!!

Thanks Sim

My RNY would have been paid for in BC but I wasn't about to wait 3-5 yrs to have it done. My health was more important then the money. Lapband has never been paid for by MSP
My experience having my surgery in monterrey mexico was the best I could ever have expected. It sure put our hospitals to shame.  The facilities, Dr.s, nursing staff and after care was superb.  If you have any questions you are more then welcome to call me at 250 769 1824

In Dr Aceves's profile under the "insurance" tab there is an OH member named Cindy from Calgary that appears to have been successful in getting Alberta Health Care to pay for her surgery...I hope they did- I want BC medicare to cover an OOC VSG for me with Dr. Aceves and it would be helpful if I wasn't the first Canadian to be covered. I hope this is helpful-

My brother (not on this board) was the only person(too our knowledge) to get his RNY covered by BC Medical in Mexico.

I tried after him and was denied.  I was however, able to write all the costs off on my income tax.
