channel 12 news tomorrow night
Actually I have only been hearing this term for a few months. I guess it is the new "psycho babble" term of the month. This conversation reminds me of a story I was told by the nurse who just discharged me. Six months or so ago this same nurse took care of a patient who seemed to be well educated about her surgery and very serious about workig her tool. When she and her ride left the discharge area they went to the closest McDonald's and she ate a Big Mac and right back to the ER she came. She has very serious heath issues still. Having worked in an ER I can tell you that I believe this little story...People do incredibly stupid things to their own bodies. Some people are doomed to lead a train wreck of a life no matter what.
Oprah needs to get a life. I have lost most all my respect for a woman who is supposedly so amazing. If she choses to remain overweight or yo yo...fine but stay off the soap box. She is using us to sensationalize and promote her show and then pad her already full coffers.
for myself, I learned through counseling a few years ago that I'm probably ADD. One of the characteristics of ADD is having an addictive personality which bears out through my life. Over time I've given up several addictive behaviors, but dang, just can't give up food- I kind of need it. I've known people who are recovering alcoholics who started drinking coffee like mad.
Dr. Blackstone's psych said I have to get counseling for behavior modification and I totally see the wisdom in that, knowing me.
Yeah, the media is funny. One day they praising one thing to high heaven and the next week their telling us all the bad sides. Nothing like balance, huh? And with limited apologies to Oprah fans, there's no reason for people to believe that celebrities know much about something just because they talk about it. Heck, in a couple yeahs she might be having WLS!
I saw that report last night. It was... not entirely enlightening, let's put it that way. The basic lesson was, WLS won't solve all your problems. If you're depressed before the surgery, you'll probably still need help with it after the surgery. The way they were selling the report it sounded like they were going to tell us of a hidden, unknown danger or something. Silly 12.
The phone doesn't ring very much at our house but it did last night just before that segment came on-I thought it was pretty short for all the advertisement they did about it. I had to take the call-it was a message for hubby so I couldn't pay much attention to the tv. But like someone else said, support is important. I decided a long time ago most reporters don't always know what they are talking about-I'm sure they have limited time for research.
I saw Buddy at SBC-he's a sweetie.
I emailed Heather on Wednesday to see if she has my info we requested from my doctor from my old hometown, but haven't heard from her yet.
I do wish the media would give us a break! Sure, there are complications that can arise from wls. We all knew what they were going into surgery and still made the choice to go. Most of us (by reading posts here on OH), have one side effect from surgery.....a new life made better because we are thin! Which show on television talks to someone after wls and hears the relief and pride in their voice when they talk about fitting into seats at theaters and on planes, not hearing little kids at the store make comments about the "fat lady", buying clothes that are stylish and attractive, crossing legs that had forgotten how, getting off tons of medications, being able to go up a flight of stairs without thinking they would die in the process, enjoying life with active children and actually taking part in their lives rather than watching from the sideline, having a spouse make comments about how good they look, and the list goes on.....? I think part of my job post surgery is living well and letting people see what a wonderful tool this surgery has given me. Of course, this isn't an easy way out, but it is the only way that worked for me. Oprah continues to deal with her weight issues. She knows how difficult it is, but for the life of me, I don't get how she justifies putting down wls. It isn't her choice, but respect the choice so many of us have made!
