Holy Cow, You have lost 114 lbs.! That is awesome! In six months!! I think that you will find that is alot of weight in such a short period of time. You are doing wonderful. At the rate that you are going you should be at goal in no time. Hang in there. Hugs, Angie What is a Plateau? Obesity Help Magazine (12/2003) written by Doctor Terry Simpson. What is a plateau? A plateau is defined as when you have maintained your weight and your measurements for four weeks. If you are still losing inches, your are not on a plateau; you are simply redistributing the weight. When can you expect to hit a plateau? You will reach the plateau during the first few weeks after surgery. Some people come back from the hospital and find they weigh more than when they went in. This is generally because a lot of the fluid we pumped in you is still in your tissues. How much weight should you lose in the first few weeks? The first six weeks after surgery it is common for you to lose 10% of your weight. So if you weigh 300 pounds you will be down 30 pound or more. More isn't bad. Sometime in the first six weeks the weight loss will stop for a while. That is just your body readjusting-that is all. The pouch. If you are on a liquid diet as first you will notice that you can drink a lot more than you thought-nope, you didn't stretch it. It is just that liquids are able to go passively through the stoma. Hunger. Early on, fluids will fill your pouch or stomach, and you will not have much of an appetite, but as you move forward you will re-discover your appetite-not a bad thing, just one sign that is time to move to more solid foods. After the first six weeks: If you have reached a plateau, you should check several things. Certain foods will slow down and even stop the weight loss. Foods with sugar, even fruits, condiment, potatoes, breads etc. Snacking will slow down weight loss. A few extra bites of something are a few calories you do not need. How to get off the plateau at 6 months and beyond. you have two choices. Cut carbohydrates or start walking. Your body is a perfect calorie counter. It will measure what you take in and what goes out. You cannot fool it. Just 45 minutes of sweating will do it.
