IS this dumping or do I have a bug???????? The last time I ate was at noon and now at 6:30pm I have become nauseous and my belly aches.. I have thrown up several times. Does anyone know if I can take a phenergan suppository??? I feel rotten! I hate to post this but I'm feeling pretty desperate right now and I don't know if I need to call the doc or not. Anyone have any suggestions???? Ughhhhhhhh!

Charlene, Are you having any pain?? I was 8 days out and I started to throw up and had alot of pain. My surgeon said not to worry unless the pain got bad. Everyone told me it was something i ate. Well it wasnt. I ended up in the e.r. with a bowel blockage. This is the only time since surgery I I have ever threw up like that. If you are not having any pain, then you should probably still call as a precausion. Also it was about this time that I figured out that I had become lactose intolerant. Milk products made me very ill, and of course, the doctor wanted me to do carnation instant breakfast, finally I put two and two together and realized it was making me sick!! Let me know if you have any other symptoms or pain, I will try to help...

I guess I did not answer the question. Yes I was allowed to take phenergan at that time. It makes a bit difference. I hope this helps.

Hi Angie, Thank you so much for your response. I am 100% better now. I guess that was my first "dumping" experience. Believe me, I hope I NEVER do that again! I always was one who had to learn from my mistakes. I did think about a bowel blockage, but I knew I wasn't in excrutiating pain...just horrible gassy pain. Newly post-oppers.....DO NOT EAT CELERY, no matter how long you chew it! I had a little in my tuna salad and although I thought the 30 chews would handle it ......it did not. That is the only thing I can think of that would have caused this. The really sad part is, I was on my way to see "River Dance" when all this started. I missed the whole show! Needless to say, my sister said it was "FABULOUS!". (she would rub it in) I did take half a phenergan so I could sleep the hour and a half trip home. Thanks for letting me know it was ok to do that. Hey Char, I am glad you are feeling better. Oh yes, the gas is terrible when you dump. I too have become severely lactose intolerent. Beware of low carb ice cream, with no sugar added. My god, I was soooooo ill! However, yogart is great. I love TCBY no fat no sugar yogart, no problems with digestion. Things I have had trouble with: Peanut butter (no sugar added) Milk Ice cream Fish (early out is painful..just too dry) You will find that celery will be tolerated pretty easly when you are further out. I do boc choy, broc., cabbage, squash, celery, apples, pickles and the like without a problem now. You went with Dr. Gibbs, right...if you check your book...around the 8th week you are able to eat raw veggies.....However, I have only had the above things cooked. Tweedy

Glad you're better. The first time I did that I thought I was gonna die. I went to bed and cramped and slept for 2 hours. My husband thought I was gonna die also. They say if you ever do it once you won't do it again. Well, it takes me awhile to learn. I think in 7 months I've had about 3 or 4 for real dumping - most of mine is from eating too fast or over eating. Sugar does not make me dump and that's a bad thing but I am very careful about what i do eat. Orange and grape juice I cannot drink. Best of luck and hang in there! It's all uphill from now on....keep that positive attitude and we will catch you on the "weigh" down!!!!! Glenn Gay Springdale

The first dump is such a learning experinece. I dump on anything that is even just a little bit greasy, so I stay very low fat. Sugar only makes me nauseated. Glad you are feeling better.

Hi all; I am going to make this real short since I have posted 4 times since I got home from hosp. but every time I hit "preview" it just goes away! So far I think I may want to swim back over to the other side. Had complications, spent 2 days and nights in ICU, my family was all called in because one of my Drs.told my daughter it was "touch and go' for a time. Had surgery on the 19th, 6 days in, had to come home with a gastrostomy tube in. It's still draining. I have been vomiting since surgery, but NO Wt. LOSS?? I'm still on liquids, and on an anti-vomiting drug, zofran, made mostly for chemo. patients. I'm going to my daughters in Bella Vista. What a blessing she has been! God Bless us all, Sharon Terhune [email protected]

Hi again: I just wanted to say that my post-op complications were not causd by anything or anybody. I was sort of high risk anyway because of my many medical problems. I was very happy with the 3rd floor staff. I'll be glad to answer any questions anyone may have. Just email me. Sharon Terhune

Another thing to be on the look out Char is that when you eat and you're throwing up alot is something called a GA Stricture. That's when the intestinal tract attached to your pouch suddenly closes up - the food that you eat has no where to go but up. Luckily you didn't have that. I can't do vegetables..the other day I thought I could have some vegetable soup and a few minutes later, I started to shiver - cold sweats, headachy and ran to the B-room and it was the dumping thing. We're all learning in this process - sometimes it's the food, or how fast ya eat or how much. We all have to monitor ourselves so that we don't get sick. Take it easy - and always give the doc office a call when you have discomfort - it's always better to be safe than sorry. I had a sour stomach not long ago and called the doc's office. I wanted to take some alka seltzer and read that it had 325 mg of aspirin but the nurse said it was okay as long as I wasn't taking that frequently - to be careful. Needless to say, by the time she called the sour stomach had passed. This too shall pass!!
