Uh oh. I am having my surgery on the 7th and it will be a laproscopic RNY. No one has said anything about a liquid diet a week and/or even a day before my surgery. I am hoping different doctors have different ideas. My pre-op will be on the 6th and that will be the first time I will have actually had a one on one discussion with my doctor. Ok, now I'm getting nervous. I think, just to be on the safe side I will start a liquid diet tomorrow. Hopefully it will cut down on any yucky side effects. Surely there is a good reason for doing this. Oh well, I'm just rambling now, please keep me in your prayers and I will do the same for all of the January soon to be losers. God bless, Charlene

I don't know anything about the pre-op diet for your procedure but I wanted to tell you rambling is allowed! I thought I would be doing that same thing all day today but I find myself strangely quiet. I have been on my clear liquid diet today...not too bad. I've had chicken broth, lime jello, crystal light and water. I'll be leaving for the hospital in the morning about 7am (I'm lucky, I live about 10 minutes from Baptist Hospital) and I'll try to post once more before I leave. Good luck on your surgery....I think we are both going to do great! Karen

My doctor put me on liquids the day before so that the stomach would be completely empty of food. When it gets that empty, there is a buildup of stomach acid which kills off bacteria and reduces the chance of infection. At least that was my understanding. Good luck--you will soon be on the losing side! Joy

Thanks Joy, I knew there had to be a good reason! I had really planned to do it anyway, but just didn't understand why Dr. Gibbs didn't put that in his instructions. I guess all doctors are different. But, if it will ward off infection, I will do it. I've been fighting a respiratory infection since the middle of November. I think I finally have it licked. Everyone I know is sick, so I'm trying real hard to be a home body before Friday. Please remember me and say a prayer Friday. I think my husband is more nervous than I am although he says he is not. After 33 years with this man, "he ain't foolin nobody!" Thanks again for your support! Charlene

Hey Charlene, Dr. Gibbs didn't require any type of liquid diet for me. I could eat anything I wanted until 7 pm the night before surgery. I could have liquids until midnight and then nothing after that. My surgery was at 7:30 the following morning.
