Question regarding hypothyroidism

I just finished my pre-op blood work and found out I have a "little" hypothyroidism. My PCP put me on Synthroid but doesn't feel like the degree of my hypothyroidism has caused my weight gain over the years. However, he seemed to think that it might cause me not to be able to have WLS. Anyone have this problem? I think my thyroid level (I don't know if they go by the TSH or T4) was 8.1 where 5.0 is the upper limit of normal. I was diagnosed with this many, many years ago, as a borderline case of hypothyroidism. They put me on Synthroid at that time and I didn't lose weight....after several years of not feeling any different, I quit taking it. I know, I know..not a great thing to do! I am scared to death, thinking this could prohibit me from having surgery. I haven't even met Dr. Baker yet....does anyone think this will keep me from being a candidate? I don't want to be ruled out without even getting started!

It should not be a problem. I have been hypo for almost 7 years and had surgery in June. Most ins. co. do not have a problem with it either and certainly the surgeons do not, they just want you to be on appropriat meds for the condition. I had surgery with Dr. Gibbs and he wasn't concerened at all. Good luck.

Karin, If your Dr. gets this taken care of, It will not cause a problem. I had the same problem, My PCP jumped on it quick! And got my levels corrected. I wouldn't think there would be a problem. Just let Dr. Baker know you are on medication to correct the problem. He also did my surgery 1year ago. He is an excellent surgeon. You have the best as far as I'm concerned. He is pretty hard on him patients, But that is because he gives you this tool and doesn't want you to waist it. Hugs Debbie Moya Dr. Baker 9/22/03 354/140/135
