Hi everyone! I had my open rny on Dec. 3rd. The surgery went well and no complications. Actually the only problem I'm having is getting the fluids in. I'm drinking 40 oz or less for the last 9 days. I tried crystal light and liquid protein drinks but it does not agree with me. (stomach pains) Right now I'm trying water, decaf coffee, and chicken broth. Nothing taste good and the desire to drink is not there. No problems with the meals except sometimes I have to skip a meal to try to get the fluids in. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Pam, Hello, It's great to hear your doing so well. I also had problems with water. I was told to try and drink at least 1 oz. every 10min. It does work. Try not to skip any meal. Because your body needs all it can get. And I know it is hard sometimes, But just hang in there. and if your getting down chicken broth that is great because that is fluid also. And I also tried the sugar free popcicles. They are great. Of course I get the cheep off brand from walmart. But they are teriffic. And also a liquid. Things made with splenda I just love. I buy splenda and use it in the place of sugar now. It has become a way of life for me. And I wouldn't change a thing. Except for maybe the dizzy spells. Ecpecially if I forget to eat. My surgery was on 9/22/03. Almost 3 1/2 months. I'm feeling so much better. I weighed 354 1 month before surgery and now I weigh 240. I get around so much better. This year wasn't a great one on many other things, But as far as my surgery goes and my Qulity of life it is for the better. Hugs and best wishes Debbie Moya

Sorry no suggestions. I am 3 months out and still have problems getting all the liquids in. Milk tastes bad to me now and I use to could drink it by the gallon. Mostly only water and watered down juices. Somedays are better than others. But as I start to get dehydrated, I get sick to my stomach. Good luck, Denise Baker 9-29-03

I know how difficult the first few weeks are, but can I suggest trying the propel waters they are flavored and the don't contain any aspertain, which is in the crystal light and for me gave me a stomach ache too. the propel waters also have vitimins in them and we need all we can get. stick with it I promise it will get easier. the first 4 weeks were the hardest and then as your insides heal you will be able to tolerate more things.GOOD LUCK!! Pam The only way I have been able to drink is to drink tea. Everyday since my surgery in Aug I go by Sonic and get a Route 44 ice tea with Sweet and Low. I add water to it all day so I get in well over 44 oz. Other drinks don't taste the same anymore but I do love tea. Good Luck-Vicki

Pam, I had the very same problem. My first few weeks, I made caffiene free tea sweetened with Splenda and lemon. I made it very weak and was able to tolerate it. Then I tried Gerber Apple Juice on ice with water added to dilute it. I have tolerated this the very best, plus it has some calories too. Try putting it in the hospital mug with a straw and just sip, sip, sip. My taste was so altered after the surgery that I was afraid that nothing would every taste right again. I am now over 2 months out and everything is back to normal. If you are having problems tolerating fluids cold, try them room temperature. Keep trying everyday to drink more than you did the day before. You can do this. Hang in there.
