It is almost impossible for a new Postop to get enough protein from food. That is why they tell you to use protein shakes. Look at what you are eating now. 1 or 2 tablespoons at a time, and you are expected to get a balanced diet out of that? Some folks use milk to supplement for protein, but many of us have become lactose intolerant after surgery. Whey protein is basically milk with the lactose and fat stripped out. It is a by product of the cheese making industry. The whey is freeze dried and packaged up with some flavoring and then sold as a 'protein drink'. Its just another form of milk. There are lots of GOOD proteins out there, but most stores dont carry them. You need something that will make up into a thin beverage so it will go down quick. It cant be gritty, have lingering aftertastes, or turn to sludge in your glass.
