Protien drinks yuk
No it is not required that you drink a protein suppliment.
Drinks are an easy way for early post-ops to get the protein that they need. By 8 weeks, you should be able to start regular foods.
You just need to be diligent about chewing everything to soft mush and only taking small bites at a time.
The next thing is to educate yourself about protein content of the foods you eat and make sure you get at least 45 to 60 grams of protein per day MINIMUM!!!
An egg has 7
a container of yogurt has 6
Beef, pork, chicken, fish has more protein per oz than anything else.
Peanuts have protein, but are high in fat so use in moderation as is peanut butter.
It takes a little studying, but some time spent educating yourself now about the food you put in your mouth can save you a world of grief later on in your post-op life when you climb on that scale and wonder how come it is creeping UP instead of down. I know since I have been there and have to fight to lose a pound now @ 2 years post.
Good Luck!

Debbie you dont need protien shakes aslomg as you can et enough protien foods. I eat 2 oz od turkey sausage with an egg for breakfast which is about 20 grams of protien.
A half cup of cottage cheese has 14 grams. Fish is high too. It is not hard to get your protien in if you can eat meat, fish, and cottage cheese.
I am only 6 weeks post op
and I dont do protien shakes. I feel great and all myn docs are very pleased, even my cardiologish who was opposed to me having wls.
Debbie, I don't know what you have tried, I can only suggest what I have heard, since my surgery is still 2 weeks away. I went to a chatroom and asked, because I feared I wouldn't find anything good. They suggested Genisoy or Unjury. My coworker likes the Atkins shakes and she gets some hot chocolate drink from Lifestyles I believe it is. Good luck girl and please let me know if you find anything decent out there.
Hey guy's. Thank you all so much for the info. I'm still having problems eating. I still can't get but about 1-1 1/2 oz. per meal. And I use to love meat now I can't hardly stand it. Not even chicken or turkey or tuna. But I do make myself eat it. Which almost makes me gag. I can't even stand to eat 3 times a day, But I make myself. Because I know what can happen if I don't eat. And yes I do take me vitamens and calcium every day. I don't miss that, Not for a min.

I have read the post's above. I do not see how it will EVER possible to eat enough protein a day if you can only eat 2 tablespoons of food I just don't get it. I make sure I make every meal count lot's of protein.
I drink Isopure ready made and the powder. It is good, NO sugar, NO carbs, and NO fat. Lot's of protein. I have done lots of research where to buy if you are interested I have found it cheap I can send the links.
Janine,
It is possible, albeit not EASY. It requires a lot of structure. Almost like feeding a baby every 2 hours, but since early post-ops can only eat 1TBSP at a time, then initially 8 or 10 meals per day is necessary to get in the protein.
Poached eggs, yogurt, pureed meats, are easier on a person initially.
Sensitivity to certain foods may show up after surgery. Some people can't eat eggs. (Try Egg Beaters)
A lot of post op nutrition is trial & error. Find what works for you and go for it.
Good Luck!

Mark,
Oh my.... I was told to ONLY eat 3x a day NO snacks! That is what I do. Oh, and ONLY 2 tablespoons (if soft foods I can eat a little more per. dr) of food at each meal. Every time I eat, I eat my protein first and make sure every meal counts. On top of that I drink 50 grams of protein a day (I can not really on that alone) Am I doing this all wrong? I hope not yikes......
