Drain and tube down/up nose????
This may be a VERY silly question but I am two weeks away from my surgery and my two biggest fears are:
Will I wake up with a tube up my nose or down my throat?
Will I leave the hospital with a drain or will I have one at all after surgery???
I am having surgery with Dr. Roller! Thanks!!!
Is there anywhere in NWA that I can buy the sugar free Davinci syrups???
I was told there was a slight chance of waking up with the tube in the throat. Luckily it didn't happen. I woke up with an oxygen mask on which I hate so I tore off. They put the small oxygen tube but it didn't go up the nose just slightly in. I didn't have any drain, what type of surgery are you having?
Hi Megan,
You will have a tube down your throat during surgery to breathe for you, but they take it out before you wake up. That's why we don't remember it, but I can bet most folks remember how sore their throats are in recovery!
All doctors are different as far as drains, as different as their patients. There are a lot of factors to decide to place drains or not, so you need to ask Dr Roller at your last pre-op meeting with him
Good luck!

I don't remember any tubes down my throat, when I woke up I had my CPAP mask on. I was still severely foggy headed that I don't remember much of anything the first night. My surgery had went in a little overtime and I think it was 4 pm or so when I woke up and I went right back to sleep.
I did leave the hospital with a tube in my stomach, it looked like a feeding tube, but it's not. It wasn't a drain tube either. It was because I am on a CPAP machine and had something to do with that. I had it for, I think 6 weeks. I had Dr Baker, so not all surgeons may do this. I think each surgeon has their own thing that they do.

With almost ANY major surgery, there is a CHANCE you will wake up with a tube.
Prior to my RNY, Dr. Baker told me it very rarely happens.
I didn't wake up with one. Neither did my mom. Noone else has mentioned it if they have at group or anything. So it must be pretty rare.
The drain thing depends on the surgeon and sometimes on the method used (open/lap). It can also depend on other things (like whether or not you have sleep apnea, etc). Dr. Baker, for example DOES leave a drain tube in patients with sleep apnea, but not others. (I had bad sleep apnea, so I had a tube. (It wasn't painful, just a nuissance.)
Most Wal-Marts sell sugar free Da Vinci and Torini syrups. (That's where I get my SF caramel syrups - at my local Wal-Mart.)
Good luck and don't be scared!
