We're home and feeling great!

Mal and I had our surgery on the 3rd and got home late yesterday afternoon.  Sure, there's a little soreness, but we feel great!  Maybe we were just lucky, but we've had no trouble with vomiting, etc. so far and feel very, very good overall!  For all who have surery coming up, I hope it goes this smoothly for you as well.

I have a question about the sugar-free popsicles....are you supposed to limit those?  We're getting in our water and protein (through the carnation instant breakfast) but my  mouth is pretty dry and last night I had 3 popsicles and scared my husband, who thought that may be "overdoing it."  Should those count as "meals" or just "clear liquids"?

Of course I didn't have Dr. Gibbs, so I don't know what he'd say.  But typically, sugar free popsicles always count as a liquid since they melt to complete fluid.

However, keep in mind that one popsicle typically melts to 1.65 ounces of fluid.  (1 ounce of fluid if you break off the tip of the popsicle to the top of the wooden stick)

So if your plan calls for a fluid cap per hour, don't go over that just because it's popsicles.  If Dr. Gibbs' plan says to only consume 1 ounce of fluid every 20 minutes (this is a common liquid cap for immediate post-ops), then you should break off the tip of the popsicle down to the wooden stick and only eat that portion of the popsicle in 20 minutes before starting on another.

if you have gas problems, you may also watch how much sugar alcohol you get in via SF anything (popsicles included).

If you ate 3 popsicles back to back, you consumed probably about 5 ounces of fluid which could be overdoing it depending on how fast you ate them.  Did you eat 3 popsicles over an hour?  Or are we talking 3 popsicles in 15 minutes here?

It was  more like 3 popsicles over a 3-hour period.  Thanks for your help...I've been through all of the reading material hundreds of times so you'd think I'd have all of this down, but I still get confused!  I'd hate to be the first post-op to "pig out" and not lose weight!!!

Oh that's not too fast at all.

That's just 1.65 ounces (probably - most popsicles are 1.65 ounce sized) of fluid every hour.

I know initially, it was easier for me to eat my liquids than it was for me to drink them.  Maybe it was the temperature or maybe it helped me pace myself.  But I just did better eating the sugar free popsicles than I did drinking.

So I totally understand!

Good to hear that things are going well for y'all so far.   Things should just keep getting better from here on.  I have your pen ready and will send it the first of the week.   Enjoy the  popsicles.  It won't be long til you get to have that first bite of real food.  You'll be amazed how filling it will be.

Hey LOSERS!!!!  Congratulations, and welcome to the loser's bench. It's a dandy place here.  Settle in and get cozy....taking care of each other right now is the most important thing.

I think you're fine on the popsicles. I Gibbs' guide book (page 3 in my edition) it states "between meals you will be allowed water 2-3 oz per hour". "Sip each 1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) during a 10-15 minute time period. You may experience some pain or nausea because you will fill up quicker. Stop sipping until the feeling passes."

So, by Wendy's calculation on the size of the popsicle, you could have two an hour. It's great that your husband is so caring, but you will know if you over do it.....your pouch will give it back to you.....and it won't be wrapped with a bow  LOL

Let  us know if there is any thing else we can do!

Hooray!!!  I'm glad you're both feeling so well. :)  It may be a little bumpy at first, but it just gets better and better!  I had a few issues at the beginning, and popsicles were a lifesaver for me.

Take care of yourselves!
