I know the importance of the vitamins but I have never heard anyone really talk about what all they take and how many times a day.  Can someone tell me what their vitamin schedule is like?

My doc told me to take 1200 mg of calcium and vitiam D and one childrens vitiam per day. But not to take them at the same time and split up the calcium. I had the band so it may be different for the different surgeries.

Hi Amy,

Doctor Baker will give you this info at your pre-op visit. I suggest you follow his rules.

However, (disclaimer here: I am not a doctor, nutritionist, nurse, veterinarian, psychologist, lawyer, or any other fancy degreed person, just one who's lived the life for two years and done lots and lots of research) after you get a few weeks post op, you might want to increase your vitamin dosages.  The Flinstones vitamins doctors have us take in the beginning are meant for children, child size bodies, and does it make sense that even two would be enough for us?

So.....here is my vitamin schedule. It is not meant to be advice, rather just what I take for what I feel my body needs.

Morning, right after brushing my teeth:

1 Centrum mulitvitamin, 1 Super B complex, 1 B-12 sublingual

lunch:   calcium citrate

dinner:  calcium citrate

bedtime, right after brushing teeth:  1 Centrum mulit, 1 super b complex, 1 b-12 sublingual

In addition, I take an iron capsule Mon, Wed, Friday at night, and every Sunday one 50,000 IU of DRY vitamin D-3.  I got my labs on Thursday and my Vitamin D was 53, and that's right in the middle of the range, but I want it higher, so I'm going to start taking one more during the week.

The Centrum I take is actually the Wal-mart equivalent

Hope this helps!

Susan,

I know we discussed the dry vitamin D-3 at the support group meeting on Thursday, but I was wondering if you can get it anywhere locally.  You get yours online right?  My vitamin D was 75 on my recent labs which is good - I'd like to keep it that way.  How much vitamin D-3 do you think I need?  I know you're not a doctor but I do value your opinion.  Thanks!!!

Wow.....75 is amazing!!  100 is the top of the range, and I'd bet there aren't many "normal" folks with numbers that high.

I checked out Vitalady.com for their Vit D-3, and they have a 1,000 IU tablet (250 for $15). I'd think with your level as high as it already is, maybe one of those 1-2 times a week might keep it there. The Rx dosage is 50,000 IU's 3x's a week and you certainly don't need that much.

There are also the Calcium Citrates that have D-3 in them...400 iu's, I think. If you took those for your calcium you'd be getting the D in as well. I think it's Citracal that you can buy at Wal-mart that way.  If you live in LR, Drug Emporium has a HUGE vitamin and supplement department. So big in fact, it's a little intimidating, but that's where I buy most of my supplements, including my Fuzzy Navel protein. I can't find the 50,000 iu of Vit -D3 locally, so that's why I buy it online.

Keep up the good work.  It was a pleasure having you at the meeting the other night!

I take:

2 sublingual (500 mcg each) B-12 daily
1 Super B-Complex daily
1 Dr. Baker's prescription multi-vitamin (Therobec I think it's called) daily
8 Citracal Plus daily (in doses of 2 at at a time, or 500 mg at a time, spread equally throughout the day)
1 Dr. Baker's prescription Iron (Tandem) daily
2 chewable (500 mg each) vitamin C daily
1 Dr. Baker's prescrition vitamin D weekly

My vitamin SCHEDULE looks like this.....
When I start drinking an hour after BREAKFAST, I take:
the 2 sublingual B-12
the Super B-Complex
the Therobec multi-vitamin
and 2 Citracal Plus.
If it is Sunday, I also add to the above:
the prescription vitamin D.
When I start drinking an hour after LUNCH, I take:
2 Citracal Plus.
When I start drinking an hour after my AFTERNOON SNACK, I take:
2 Citracal Plus.
When I start drinking an hour after SUPPER, I take:
2 Citracel Plus.
Right before BED, I take:
the 2 vitamin C.
If it has been 2 hours since I had any dairy or calcium supplement, I go ahead and take the Iron at that time too.  If it has NOT been 2 hours since I had any dairy or calcium supplement, I take the iron in the middle of the night (when I wake up to pee or whatever).

I am a Baker baby and this is in line with what he recommends EXCEPT FOR:
the added Super B-Complex which is NOT in his standard regimine (but I have his blessing to take it anyway because I started having peripherial neuropathy in my left leg) AND
AND the 8 Calcium per day (Dr. Baker recommends 2 the last time I checked - but that's not enough - we should be getting in 1500 to 2000 mg per day and 2 is not going to do that).

Good luck!!!

Thanks Ladies!   I knew it must be more involved than some in the morning and some at bedtime.  I didn't see what the big deal would have been with that.

I see I am going to have to get something kind of plan.  I can't remember if I took my meds at night now.  Sometimes I think I did and then sometimes I just can't remember.
