Congratulations, I know Dr. Baker is going to do a great job.  I had lapband and gallbladder surgery with him and both experiences were top notch.  One thing I know that made a difference for me in comfort was the purchase of a microbead (aka squishy) pillow.  It really hugs and forms to your body and in the hospital they will make you cough...remember how you learned in Support Group at Baptist?  Anyway, that's my two cents and best of luck.

I have seen those.  I think that may be the one and only thing my girls don't have!  I will see if I can find one tonight.  I was thinking of looking for a small pillow to carry around with me instead of a huge bed pillow.

I know when I get nervous, I have to remind myself that Dr. Baker is one of the BEST out there.  My heart is the only thing that concerns me.  That is one reason I am having the surgery I feel like it is ticking time boom.  I was surprised he didin't require any heart test before surgery.

In your pre-surg workup at Baptist, they'll do an EKG, so don't worry. :)

Sounds like you've got your bases covered; we'll see you on the Loser's Bench!!

Thanks Wendy.  I am to be there at 9:30 and they said my surgery was scheduled for 11:30.  I hope it is on time.  I remember wating on my C-sections and it was HE**. I hate the waiting.   Do they put the epidural in while you are wating or in the Surgery room?  The only ones I have had where were my legs wouldn't move.

They won't do all that in the hours before; likely you'll have to go in on Monday or Tuesday to get your final bloodwork/tests done.

I didn't get an epidural, so I can't say if you get it beforehand.  They'll take good care of you, though. :)

Tell them if you feel anxious while waiting and they can give you some happy juice to calm you down. I had abdominal surgery in April and I don't remember them doing the epidural, so it must have been done while I was "out".
They won't give you so much in the epidural that you can't move your legs....you MUST be able to get up and walk as soon as possible.

Good luck, we'll be rooting for you and dusting off a seat on the loser's bench!

I'd scratch the laxatives off the list.  You do NOT want to get on those post-op.  Some people get addicted to them post-op and it is NO FUN HAVING to take them to go.

Just use the stool softeners (which are non-addictive) and wait for it to happen.  It will happen WITHOUT laxatives - it may just take a while.

I'd add:
Flintstones chewables
Skim milk
SF flavored syrups (to flavor your milk with - heated skim milk & SF chocolate syrup makes EXCELLENT hot cocoa)
several tablespoon measuring cups (to measure your meals - I use mine to this day)
several 1/8 cup measuring cups (to measure your meals - I use mine to this day)
2 front-buckling bras (so you can wear a bra even if your incision goes up high by unbuckling the bottom 1 or 2 clasps)
puzzle books (or something to do while sitting down &/or waiting - to pass the time in the hospital, etc)
digital scale (to measure foods that do not do calorie/fat/carb/protein counts by volume, but by weight - this enables you to pour your 2 tablespoons on the scale to see what the calorie/etc count is for your 2 tablespoons which lets you more accurately track your intake)

Good luck!!!

P.S.  They do NOT put the epidural in while you are in the waiting room (at least they didn't my mom who had surgery on the 11th of last month).  We just had to sit there for a little while until they were ready to take her back.

Wendy, great list.  I didn't get the laxatives or the stool softner.  My mom said she would go back and get it if I needed it.  I already have my Flintstones, I got the chewables and my girls have the gummies.  I did get a measuring cup with little ounces.  I am going back to Wal-Mart tonight so I will look for the other spoons.

I also ordered 2 front buckling bras the other day, probably from your advice on my incision question!  I have a small scale, it isn't digital but it is one of those small kitchen scales.

I bet they do the epidural in right before surgery, in the surgery room.
