Question of the day!
I had to think about mine for a second to be sure that's what I wanted...
I have been pondering this for about 2 years now. I would like to own my own business. I don't know how many of you are familar with Back at the Ranch in Springdale, but that is my favorite store for browsing. I found a supplier or the handmade rustic furniture, but my life isn't in the position to be a business owner at the moment. I think the busniess world would try to eat me due to my age. I'm no spring chicken, but I don't have too many adult years under my belt. Anyways...I would sell rustic furniture, potpourri garland(I make and sell these now), handmade quilts, I could go on and on. Maybe someday the local economy will be able to handle such a store again and I'll actually do it!

I am back doing my favorite job after about 17 years out of it. I worked as a Petroleum Landman, running chains of title to determine land and mineral owners at court houses so the minerals can be leased for oil & gas companies to drill wells. Used to have to go to the courthouses 17 years ago -- required a lot of travel and away from home. Didn't like that part, but loved the work. When the oil and gas industry went bust I had to get out and worked for the Sebastian County Housing Authority for 15 years. Provided rental assistance to low income people. Got a call one day from my old boss to offer me a job as a landman again. Told her I was too fat now to go rumaging through courthouses. I don't have to do that anymore! Working in White County (Searcy, AR), but all the books I need are on line, so work from home on my computer. I absolutely love my job, get to stay at home and work, and the pay is good. I am so blessed. Michael.
Funny you should ask since I am right now trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I'll have 30 years with Alltel in October working in legal, legislative and regulatory areas, but Verizon is buying us around year end and in all likelihood most of us corporate types will be viewed as "synergy" and turned loose.
Sooooooooo, what job do I want to have? Not sure yet, but I am ready to do something totally different and get out of the corporate "people eater' world.
I would really like to do something that makes a difference in the everyday lives of people rather than making money for the stockholders. I have some time to decide what and see what opportunities come along so we will see what develops.
Don't take me wrong, Alltel has been a fun ride and provided a good life for my family and I have made lots of great friends all over the country through my work. Just ready to shift gears and not start the corporate ladder climbing all over again. Who knows what blessings lie beneath what seems like an undesirable situation.
One thing for sure is that because of the RNY and associated improved health, I will feel a lot more like looking for a job than I would have prior to that.
