I am interested in taking a job with the Arkansas Dept of Health but the pay will be a big drop from my current employer. I am willing to take the cut if they will pay for a lap-band, but I don't know anyone to ask. Has anyone here used their insuance for any bastric surgery or know of anyone who has?

My husband works as an attorney for the state, and sadly no they do not pay for any kind of weight loss surgery - even though baptist offered them a very nice discount.  The board that decides such refused it by a narrow margin and it is possible in the future they may cover it but with the economic being what they are, and given that they cut benefits for teachers (teachers had the best benefits of state employees) last year, I wouldn't wait for it with baited breath.

No State of Arkansas insurance pays for any WLS as far as I know.  It's one of the things Dr. Baker is constantly trying to change because AR State employees are so overweight as a population.

Current State employee here. No ifs, ands or buts about it. They won't even consider it.  I had to go through the Working Disabled Program to get my RNY done.
