Almost a year out. How I ate pre-op vs now.
We were posting about things we have always done that we now do differently. Obviously the biggest thing we ALL do differently is eat and/or drink. I thought it would be neat to compare our before-WLS to our after-WLS.
On a day like today, BEFORE RNY I would have gotten up, gotten ready for work without eating or drinking anything. I'd have stopped at McDonalds on the way into town (anywhere between 8 & 9:30) to get
BREAKFAST - 2 bacon egg & cheese buscuits, maybe some hash browns & a super-sized diet coke.
I'd have nursed that diet coke until lunch (anywhere between 11 & 3) when I'd have probably have stopped at local mexican restaurant or Wendy's drive through to get
LUNCH - 1 big bowl of white cheese w/ a couple of baskets of tortilla chips while waiting on 2 or 3 hard shell beef tacos w/ only beef & cheese inside the & a large diet coke
OR - 1 spicy chicken sandwich combo (plain w/ cheese), great biggie fries & a great biggie diet coke.
I'd have nursed that diet coke until it was almost time to get off work (or went through the drive through to get one if I had stopped for lunch somewhere & didn't get one to go).
If I ate earlier in the day (more towards 11), I'd drive through the Wendy's drive through on the way home from work to get
SNACK - spicy chicken sandwich combo meal (plain w/ cheese), great biggie fries & a great biggie diet coke to hold me over until supper. If I ate later in the day, I'd wait until I picked the kids up.
When I picked the kids up, I'd take them to get
SUPPER - the local mexican restaurant to eat supper where I'd usually order fajita nachos OR I'd take them to the local pizza parlor where we'd order the biggest hamburger/pepperoni pizza there was. (It goes without saying at this point that I'd have another huge diet coke.)
We'd go home and I'd drink diet sprite after diet sprite until about 10 oclock at which time I'd usually get eat a
SNACK - couple of apples cut up into slices with about 1/2 cup of peanut butter.
Then I'd down some more diet sprite before going to bed.
It's amazing I could even LIVE eating like that for more than a few days.
Here is how I ate today (POST RNY), I got up and immediately made myself & ate (at 7:30)
BREAKFAST - 1/2 sugar free pancake w/ 1 tsp butter & 2 tbsp sugar free syrup.
An hour later, I began drinking and drank until about 12. My fluids were: 8 ounces water, 2 cups skim milk w/ 1 protein-2go pak and about another 8 ounces of water.
30 minutes later (around 12:30), I ate
LUNCH - 1/2 cup black beans & 1 tbsp Montery Jack shredded cheese topping.
An hour later, I began drinking and dran****il about 3:30. My fluids were: 8.9 ounces water, 16.9 ounces water and 4.9 ounces water.
30 minutes later (around 4), I ate a
SNACK - 1 medium banana, 1/2 ounce cocoa roasted almonds & 1 sugar free Milano cookie.
An hour later, I began drinking and so far I have drank 12 ounces water.
I also just paused to eat 1/2 cup of Kroger Deluxe Vanilla No-Sugar-Added Low-Fat Frozen Yogurt (which melts to liquid so I don't stop drinking for that).
Now I'm going to go get another bottle of water to drink while I start supper.
Looking at that difference, it's no wonder I feel (and look) like a whole new woman.
Wendy,
Isnt it amazing how different life is. Our whole life doesnt revolve around food. I no longer sit at the computer every day eating an entire pack of choc chip cookies while drinking a 2 liter diet dr. pepper. How we ever lived like that, I'll never know.
I just know that I am so thankful that life is different. I dont follow the rules exactly, and some days Im not a good girl at all, but in comparison to what I used to do, Im totally different, and proud to be so.

Yeah my eating is so way different than it was a year ago. No more fast food, double cheeseburgers, large fries and sweet tea. No more cookies (well maybe every once in a while) no reading labels, just not caring what went in my mouth. But now, I read labels and check everything I chew chew chew and I don't drink and eat. Which I miss more than anything.

Gary and I were talking about this while on vacation. We went to a couple of our favorite Mexican restaurants while in San Diego, and man, what a difference. Before WLS each of us would order a carne asada burrito (made on the GIANT tortillas, so they were about 4" in diamater) and three rolled tacos (taquitos) with quacamole. We ordered an order of 6 rolled tacos, I ate 1 3/4 and Gary ate 3. Didn't feel badly at all about leaving that last one on the plate.
I've been thinking about this since yesterday and for the life of me can't remember what I'd eat for breakfast before WLS, probably something leftover from dinner the night before or a big bowl of cereal. I don't care much for fast food breakfasts, so that wouldn't happen often.
Lunch would be something from Jason's or McAllister's, usually one of thier big sandwiches and an order of potato salad. Maybe a fillet of fish sandwich from McD's or a burger and fries from some fast food place.
Dinner, depending on if Gary was home to eat with me or not, would be some sort of comfort food (meatloaf, mashed potatoes gravy, etc.). If he was gone, most likely a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream.
Now a carton of SF vanilla frozen yogurt can be in the freezer for weeks. Sometimes I'll add a bit to my protein drink if I need the calories.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
