I have a question

Morning everybody. I have a couple of questions. I will be four weeks out of RNY surgery this Wed. I am still really sore, even though I have been walking, walking, walking on the treadmill everyday. There is like two places that are sore. On the left side of the incision and then down closer to the belly button. Is this normal? I work some around the house. I still don't pick up anything with any weight to it. I try to be very careful about stuff like that.  I feel ok, but my energy level is still low. I'm still only eating two tablespoons of food per meal and I try to stick to the high protein stuff. Anyway, if some of you who have had RNY could maybe just give me some information on how long it took you to get over it, I would appreciate it. I go to my first post op visit with Dr. Baker this friday. Which leads to my second question. Any patient of Dr. Baker's know if you have to have any lab work done before you go to your first post-op visit? I couldn't find anything in my paperwork. I found the other for you know three month and six month. If nobody remembers, I will call his office this afternoon and ask.  Thank you guys.

Hi Ann, I forgot, was your surgery open or lap?  In either case most of the "work" is done on the left side of your abdomen. If it was lap, they insert the CO2 in to abdomen through an incision in your navel to inflate your belly.  Is your post op visit soon? If there isn't any sign of infection, then I'd wait to ask when you go in, otherwise, it wouldn't hurt to call the office. As far as I know, Dr Baker doesn't require you to have any labs done for the first post op visit. Keep up the good work, you're doing everything right!

Hey Susan, Hope you are feeling better. Are you still pretty sore? Bless your heart. I know that wasn't what you expected when you went in. I hope you are feeling much better. And by the way, how's the face looking? I had open surgery. My post op is this Friday. So I'm not really that much concerned. My incision looks good. No sign of infection. It still kinda hurts to get up and down out of a chair and get in bed. And bend over to pick stuff up. Ya know, stuff like that. Otherwise I feel ok. I'm still having a problem getting my bm's regulated. LOL..... but I guess that's a work in progress. Be sure and let me know when the next support meeting is because I want to be there and meet everyone.

I think the next one is May 8th...I'm going to try to be there if I can get my mom to come stay with the kids until I make it home....hubby has to work graveyards that night and I don't usually make it home until around 10pm.  Hope you can make it!

You won't need to have any labwor****il 6 months.  All he did for my first post-op was take out the big tube in my stomach for releasing air (he does this to all CPAP patients), and he also took out the little stitch that was above my incision.  I saw the dietician/nurse for like 20 minutes and saw Dr Baker for like 10.  That was it, and he sent me home with abdominal pad in case I needed to change the one he put over the hole from the tube, and some tape and told me to hold my hands over my hole tightly until I got home.

Hi Ann, Sorry you're still feeling so sore, but I think it's pretty normal.  I had Lap RNY and all of my pain was on the left side, but I don't know what's "normal" for the open procedure.  Its probably just torn muscles healing...if its not red and/or hot then its probably not infected.  You should be feeling like a new woman very soon.  As for the low energy level, try to rest as much as possible...no need to push yourself at this stage.  Make sure your doc has checked/checks your B12 level....mine was dangerously low before surgery but as soon as I started taking the shots my energy level went through the roof! How are you doing otherwise?  Getting enough protein, fluids??  Oh, and about the BM's...girl...I'm over a year out and I'm still not regulated....like you said, a work in progress!  Just take it one day at a time.

Thanks. All the information really helps. Dr. Baker said my B12 was normal the day of surgery.  So I guess it is just taking time to get back up to speed. I try to be so careful all the time because I'm afraid I might do something wrong. I know you know what I mean...lol. In what I'm eating, I'm tring to eat stuff that is high in protein. Drinking milk in between meals, that kind of stuff. I have a hard time getting in my liquids, but I feel like I have a glass permanently attached to my hand. I'm always drinking. I have V8 at least once a day. Sometimes two glasses. But it's only six ounces a glass. Anyway, thanks for the help and I hope I do get to meet ya at the next meeting.
