Vitamins
Hi Sassy,
I'll answer your last question first, and with one word: FOREVER
Now, here's what's recommended, but as you go along you may find out you need to "tweek" it some.
Mulitvitamins: you'll start out of Flinstone's chewables when you're first post op, then go to something more for adults. I take the Wal-mart generic of Centrum....one in the a.m., one at night
Calcium: Calcium CITRATE.....NOT carbonate. You have to have stomach acid to be able to break down carbonate and absorb it, and after RNY, you won't have stomach acid anymore. You'll need two a day, not taken with your mutivitamin, and at least two hours apart. I take one at lunch, one at dinner...again, the Wal-mart generic Calcium Citrate with Vit D. Don't waste your money on Viactive or the other chewy ones, they're carbonate.
B-12: You might or might not need this, but they're good insurance to take anyway. Buy the ones that are called 'sublingual", they dissolve under your tongue. I get 1,000 mg. You can't OD on B vitamins, what your body doesn't need is flushed down the john.
Those are the basics. Keep up on your lab work every six months or so. You might need to add vitamin D at some point. It helps you to absorb calcium.
Just keep up, you'll be ok. Hope this helps, any more ??'s just ask. If I don't know it, someone else might, or I'll find the answer for you.
Susan
I second everything Susan said.
To it I would just add:
IRON
Dr. Baker (although I have no idea about Gibbs) had me taking iron from the get-go and I still ended up low at my 6 month labs, so they are upping it to Rx Iron now. So I'd recommend iron if your surgeon doesn't have any recommendations against it.
Good luck!
