As if life couldn't be any worse.
So, I've been having a sore throat, not coughing, not temperature, sore throat. Well, yesterday it became unbearable, so I called my doctor and he was over booked, but he told me to head to the ER. I get there and by the second, I was vomitting and getting worse and worse. Finally, I get in and they look at throat and say it's red, okay, and then he listens to my lungs and orders a chest xray and it comes back and I have freaking pneumonia. I was dehydrated and they immediately hooked me up to an IV and began pumping me full force with fluids and medicine to stop the vomit. The doctor wanted me to be admitted but I hate hospitals and made my case for home care. I have had two big doses of antibiotics and phenergan and am doing better, not teaching or even going to my office, but I can sit upright. But, something seemed alarming to me, I was talking to a woman the other day who had bypass and she told me she could eat an entire hamburger with a few fries and she is just eight months out. To this day, I can't eat an entire anything. I wonder if something is wrong? Does anyone else have any insight to how much I should be eating? Like, a fried with pam egg, less than half.
as for the food question.....I cant eat a whole burger with the bun and veggies, it really depends on the food and how it is cooked. I have noticed that I lose interest in eating. My re-gain is from eating the wrong foods, drinking at the wrong times, drinking cokes and so on. I take blame for my own actions.
I can eat about 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and nothing else. I just ate two chicken strips from Zaxbys. I am full. Like I said it really depends on the food. Also every surgeon and surgery is different. Some doctors I have heard make the pouch smaller in some people. Yes they all try to basicslly make it the same in general, but I have read where in some people who have eating disorders and serious health issues their pouches seem to be smaller. I noticed that how well I chew my food affects how much I can eat.
If you are concerned ask your dr or nut. I wish I still got full on one or two bites, but I am 7 yrs post op. Check out the Grads or Main board and ask there too. That way you are asking people from different docs as well. It wont hurt to ask around. Sometimes it is the better answer.

I am not doing so good in this part of my journey...9 yrs later. :-(
Jeannie, I'm so sorry you're so sick, but at least we get to see you! Hope those meds work well and soon.
I'm one month farther out than you and I can eat about 3/4 of a junior burger, no fries, thank you very much. It so depends on what the food is, how dense, etc.
My Nut's guidelines are at 18 months you should be able to eat MAX 1- 1 1/2 cup food and that's it for the rest of our lives. I can eat a whole poached egg on toast, if that's any help.
Hugs
Susan
So sorry you're sick...my daughter had pneumonia last year. She went to bed perfectly fine, woke up in the middle of the night with 103 fever and vomiting...took her to the doc next morning and it was pneumonia...she didn't cough not once...go figure.
About the food: I can eat a whole regular hamburger from McDonalds, meat and bread...some days I can only eat 3/4...I'll have one MAYBE once a month. I can eat a whole packet of instant oatmeal. How much I eat depends on the density. I can only eat 4oz. max of any kind of meat but a whole cup of soup or something like that. I don't really know if I can eat more than 1 cup at a time because I haven't tried to. Maybe your pouch is smaller than usual??
Hope you get to feeling better soon!
