anyone else have trouble quitting smoking?
You have to really want to quit, it's that strong of a will that is needed to do it. I will tell you, me personally, I could not quit for anything in the world, when I was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) I did not quit, when I was told by my Dr and pulmonologist that if I did not quit, I would not live another 2 years, and still I did not quit smoking.
But Sept 2005 I went for my weightloss surgery, and I had all the IV's in and I had an epidural already in and they were pretty much ready to wheel me into surgery and out of no where I had a asmtha attack, and guess what? They sent me home and told me to quit smoking. Nobody could possibly know the sadness and hate I felt towards myself to be sent home from surgery because I couldn't even quit smoking long enough.
Needless to say, by the time I quit smoking for 8 weeks completely, and had my labwork done, and was ready for surgery Medicare made changes to their policy in regards to weightloss surgery and because of that I did not get surgery until last August.
So please please try to quit smoking, you may end up waiting longer than you think. And you must be smoke free for 8 weeks in order for all the chemicals to clear out of your blood. Most surgeons are very strict about this, if they even think you might not have fully quit smoking they won't even bother with you. It is important that all those chemicals be out of your system when they put you under so you don't have any complications and end up on a ventilator when you wake up. Also the chemicals and smoking can cause problems to your new pouch as well.
I used the patches, I started out 3 weeks on 21mgs, and then 2 weeks on 14mgs and I would have gone 2 weeks on 7mgs except that by the 2nd week of 14mg I no longer needed the patches. I also made signs and put them up all over the house, in the bathroom, kitchen and 2 in the living room (1 by the front door and 1 by the couch where I sleep). I cut out pictures of hot girls in sexy outfits and bikinis and wrote sayings like "She looks hot because she doesn't smoke" or "You can't be skinny and have your ciggies to" And it worked for me.
Also the first few weeks I avoided places where smoking was heavy, and when my friends and family lit up I would move away from them and after a while my friends and family got the point and didn't smoke around me.
Now I have been smoke free for 2 years, my COPD has stopped progressing as quickly as it was and my lungs don't hurt as much, I am rarely using my oxygen during the day anymore (except maybe during exercise).
You can do it, I know you can. Just make your mind think that if you smoke you can't have surgery and soon your mind will decide it would rather be healthy than be smoking.

I know it doesn't work with everyone but taking Wellbutrin did it for me! After smoking for 28 years, I have now been a non-smoker for almost 2 years. I tried the patches and they didn't help me personally, with Wellbutrin quitting wasn't something I had to work at, I just gradually lost the desire. Good luck to you, you can do it!

thanks guys.. it is soo hard.. i know for sure i have to be quit 2 months before they will do sgy. the meds i know of is chantix and it is not covered by my ins and is very, very expensive. i hate it that it has this much control over me.. i really do hate it. it's like i could just kick myself in the butt everytime i do it. the more i think bout quitting, the more i seem to smoke. make any sense? not to me.. i am just gonna have to buckle down and do it.
What you should do is find out how much the chantix costs per week, then figure out your weekly cigarette costs, and I bet the chantix will be cheaper, atleast I hope it would be. I know my mom was supposed to do the chantix and she was like, it's to expensive, and I don't remember how much she told me it was for a month but I remember telling her that she spends way more than that a month of cigarettes.
So try looking at it from that way. Also talk to your doctor about it, your doctor may be able to give you samples of the chantix. I know some doctors keep samples of all kinds of meds in their offices.
