make you lose weight, put you on a diet before surgery?  My doctor wants me to lose around 50 lbs, before he will do the surgery..is this normal? Do most of the doctors ask this of patients? My BMI is over 70, I know that is the main reason...but is there any doctors who would do the surgery without my having to lose all of that weight? I am so scared that I wont be able to do it...and its not that Im not going to try...I am...but since Ive always failed at diets, I am scared I will fail at this too. I know how important getting the surgery is, but I also know my limitations.. Ugh...Im so confused

yes! most doctors do this to show your willingness to comply.

and its it helps both you and your surgeon on surgery day....

the liquid diet helps shrink the liver and stomach making your surgeons job easier.

and that is a plus for you as well....

I also failed on any diet before this last round of trying for WLS

I put myself on a healthy eating diet for the 2 months it took me to get an appointment with my WLS Dr. because I was told at seminar at my weight I would have to do a 4 week liquid diet....I knew I would cheat! so I lost 20 lbs on my own...resulting in only having to indure a 2 week liquid diet. which was hard enough!

if you have reached the point of surgery you probably feel like its you last chance at "normalcy"

start now....its ALOT of work....

start walking....start drinking protien shakes....this helped me loose 20 lbs. I drank one for Breakfast...because I dont eat any breakfast.

my BMI at Joining OH was 72 so I do know about the feelings you are having.

but if ultimatly you are having surgery than start living like you already have now.

it will make the transition go smoother because YOU are controlling the process not the surgery.

all the feelings you are having are soo normal.

you CAN do this! I know it....I did it....and Im practicly pathetic in the willpower department!

have you had your consult yet?

been to seminar? a support group??

get to a support group! I cant stress how important it is to go to support groups even BEFORE surgery....lots of information to be learned from those who have been there done that!

good luck sweetie!

I have to be on the liquid diet for 3 weeks to start with. After that, I go to a 1200 cal/day diet...then possibly another round of the liquid diet before the surgery, depending on my total weight loss. This was my first consult from my surgeon. I went to his seminar a few yrs ago, but I am going to another one in Dec. I start the liquids tomorrow. I havent tried a support group yet. I wasnt sure I would need one this early in my progress...but I can see where it would benefit me and encourage me.. Thanks so much!

My BMI was 42.6 when I went to my consult.  I started my liquid diet and it lasted 2 weeks.  During that 2 weeks, I lost 11 pounds in that 2 weeks.  You will probably lose much more than that in the 3 weeks you are on your 1st liquid diet.   Please don't be discouraged by the liquid diet thing.  The reason most surgeons require one is because it shrinks the liver, making the surgery much safer.  Not only that, it shows a commitment to following the surgeon's advice.  The liquid diet is the worst and if you can do that, you can totally do the post-op diet.   Every time I drank one of those shakes, I would think to myself "I am doing this to save my life.  I only have to do this for this many more days, and then I get my prize/surgery.  Then my entire life will change for the better."  And you know what?  It has.  It is worth it.  You are worth it.  And you CAN do it.

HI Lisa, Dr Gibbs doesn't require any type of pre-op diet or bowel cleansing before surgery. All doctors are different in what they require prior to surgery, but this is certainly one of the reasons I chose Dr Gibbs. Keep up on your studying of all of this, you'll be better informed and less confused.

My son's doctor is making him lose forty pounds but it's because the hospitals ct machine will only work on someone who is 400 or below.  The doctor said that if something happened right after surgery, if they couldn't do the CT scan, then they would have to open him up and they just don't want that added complication so he has to lose the forty pounds.  Not all hospitals have the machinery to use on people over 400 pounds, plus, he said that the weightloss will help to shrink the liver but mostly for the machine.  Now the surgeon who did my surgery didn't care and had equipment for all sizes, in fact, his heaviest patient was over 700 pounds and he did just fine.

I had Dr. Gibbs, and I did do a pre-op diet of all liquids for two weeks prior to surgery.  I wasn't required to lose weight first, but I did lose on the pre-op diet.  It helped me get in the right mindset, and you will be doing lots of liquids and purees for about the first month after your surgery, so it helps to get in the habit. And it does help your liver shrink, which makes surgery easier.   Good luck--you can do it!

Lisa May I ask why you are limited to Jonesboro only please? Thanks AmyBeth and I did have to lose 10lbs and I did a very fasting and starving type diet for 2.5 months preop, started eating only 600 calories a day and the week before did a liquid diet, my doc said the more I did to help, the more it helped him and me both!

I am limited to Jonesboro bc I dont have anyone to drive me back and forth to other cities. Yes, I can drive...but at this size, driving is painful, so I limit my driving as much as I can. Ive also never driven anywhere else...like to other cities...so it wouldnt be possible on my own..
