Headaches

Here recently I have been experiencing headaches. They go away temporarily after I eat, but they return after a few hours. I spoke with a co-worker who had the surgery and she said I'm not eating enough. Have any of you ever heard of this before?

Could be low blood sugar from not eating enough. That always give me a headache.

HI Bionca, I think the first thing to look at is your fluid intake. Are you getting in all your liquids? It's hard to say if you're not eating enough without knowing what you are eating now.  Are you tracking your intake on a program like FItday.com? Personally, I think I'd put a call into Carrie, Dr Gibbs nurse. She'll give you the right info. Take care and let us know how you are!

YES!!  I had the exact same problem at around 7-8 months out from surgery.  I brought it up with Dr. Gibbs back in August at my check-up appt.  The culprit?  I wasn't eating enough AND I was going too long between meals.  JoBeth wants us to eat 3 meals a day with no snacking, but have protein shakes between meals.  I don't really do protein shakes so I was going several hours without eating...that was causing my blood sugar to drop too low, hence the headaches.  He suggested protein bars between meals to up my calories and to keep my blood sugar stabilized.  Sometimes I eat a protein bar, but mostly I eat some fresh fruit (bananas or grapes) between meals.  No more headaches, they've gone away completely.  They actually went away withing a couple of days after I started eating more and eating between meals.  I know JoBeth doesn't condone eating between meals, but that just doens't work for me...and I always make sure its a healthy snack like fruit. My calorie level at the time was between 700-750 daily...I'm now up to over 900 on most days and I feel so much better.  Call Carrie and get her advice, but I'm willing to bet you need to eat more and more often.  Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input.  I tried adding a snack (yogurt, fruit, cereal bar, protein bars...etc) and it seems to be doing the trick. I failed to mention that I recently joined a gym and I believe that I was burning more then what I was taking in.  Also, I only experience the headaches on the weekend, which is when I don't eat as often.  Work keep me on a schedule most days, but here lately I've been working overtime and not eating at my regular times.  Sometimes going as long as 6-10 hrs between meals.  I've been making sure that I'm getting in my liquids though.  Most days I drink almost 3 24 oz cups before I leave work.  That is a task within itself.  Susan,  Yes I've been tracking ****asionally) my intake on Fitday.com and I'm averaging about 700-800 calories a day. Thanks again for helping me out. If there is anyone that lives in the Benton area and would like to join curves let me know.  I have some free passes if you want to try it out.  I recently did a fitness study and I lost 7lbs and 10.75 inces in 23 days.

Hey Bionca, I live in Alexander!  Maybe we could get together for coffee sometime? Glad you got your headache situation figured out.  OOOHHHH  6-10 hours is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to go without something in your little pouch!  Keeping on schedule is pretty hard for me, I'm a hairdresser and can't always just stop in the middle of a client and eat something. You might want to try keeping a can of almonds ( JoBeth's suggestion) at your desk and pop a couple of them between meals. They're very high in beneficial fat and high in protein. Careful though, I have to count them and make sure I don't have more than about 10-15 of them  in a day,  they're good for you, but high in calories.  Even still, JoBeth says they're a good snack for us to have handy.

Susan & Bionca, I live close to both of you -- out Colonel Glenn.  It would be nice to meet and have coffee and get to know some WLS post-op folks first-hand.  My surgery is this Tuesday (12/4), so I'm going back and forth from being hyped to being nervous. Who is "JoBeth" that I keep hearing about?

Hi there! Tuesday will be here before you know it and you'll be another loser!  Where are you having your surgery and how long are you expected to be there?  I've been known to "pop-in" to see our newbies if the whole schedule works out. JoBeth is a nutritionist at Baptist who counsels all of Dr Gibbs patients, as well as others at the hospital. She's really quite an expert at the care and feeding of WLS patients, has a Master's Degree in Nutrition.....one smart cookie( non fat, low sugar LOL). We're here for you, let us know if you need anything

My surgery is at the Rivercrest Surgery Center on Kanis (Dr. Luttrell), but it will be quick.  I'm going in at 7:00; surgery at 8:00; out at 11:00 or 11:30.  Zip, zip, zip!
