What exactly is a fill and how do they do it? I am contemplating on which surgery I want to shoot for!
A fill is when they put fluid into the band to make it tighter. That makes the food and liquid stay in your stomach pouch longer so you stay full longer. I have had 2 fills and will stay at that for awhile. When they fill the band, they numb the spot where the port is and put a needle into the port and inject the fluid. Normally, they sit you up then and the x-ray machine is around you, you drink a little barium so it will show up on x-ray and you can watch how fast or slow the fluid goes through the little hole that goes into the big part of your stomach. My fills have not hurt at all. I think it is really neat to watch. Once the fill is done, you eat much much slower which makes you get fuller much quicker.
I chose the lap band because it is completely reversable. I wasn't sure how I would like it so that was important to me. The surgery is not nearly as major as the gastric bypass. It is a personal choice, only you can decide which would be best for you.
