Hi there
I use a couple of different things. One is the protein bullet...42g of protein in a 3.1oz vial...I only drink half of one a day when I need it. Your body can only absorb 25-30g of protein in one sitting, so I wouldn't suggest drinking the whole thing at one time. I keep them in the fridge and drink it straight, you can also pour it over ice or mix it with SF kool-aid or crystal light or something like that. Fruit punch is the best in my opinion.
The other one I use is from Wal-Mart...Body Fortress 100% whey protein powder in vanilla. It has 23g of protein in one scoop and only 1g of sugar...you'll need to look out for high sugar contents in some powders and eventually you'll need to watch the fat content as well. I mix it a couple of different ways. I sometimes will blend one scoop of protein powder with 8oz. FF milk and about 3/4 to one cup of mixed berries, frozen. I also will blend one scoop of powder with 1 Dannon Light & Fit smoothie (strawberry banana), that's pretty tasty too. I just bought some SF & FF banana cream jello powder, I'm going to try mixing that with FF milk and the protein powder.
The protein powders have to become an acquired taste. None of them, in my opinion, really taste good, but if you tweak them enough you can get them to be tolerable enough that you'll drink at least one a day. You'll probably need to experiment for a little while until you find one that suits you. For the first 2-3 months after surgery I couldn't stand any kind of protein drink, I just couldn't get past the smell. During that time I drank Slim Fast Low Carb ready to drink shakes, the chocolate was pretty good and one shake has 20g of protein. I had to stop drinking them because the fat content in them was too much for me (my personal decision). But if nothing else works for you I suggest you try them, they really saved me early on. You won't have to start worrying about calories or fat intake for a few months after surgery and by then you should have your protein under control. I would also suggest that whatever powder you decide to go with, get the vanilla because you can mix a lot of things with it, especially when you can start having fresh fruits again.
Another thing you can try is Calorie Countdown milk, I drank a lot this early on too...its lower in calories, fat, and sugars than regular milk. I always drank the chocolate milk and added a serving of dry powdered milk to it...18g of protein in one 8oz drink. I don't drink it so much anymore, again because of the fat...yes, I am becoming mental about my fat intake! But early on it really helped me get my protein and fluids in.
Can't think of anything else I've tried. Hope this helps give you some ideas. It is all trial and error in the beginning but befor long you'll be a pro!
Take care,
Denise
