Pre-Op Shopping Help
Okay as you all know I am counting down to my surgery *grins* and well being on Social Security I only get paid once a month and so I want to know, in your personal opinions and experience, what kinds of things should I buy to prepare myself for after surgery. Items such as which are the best foods, vitamins, will I need to buy any kind of special hygeine items, since I will be having mine open rny. Do I need to invest in some kitchen scales? Digital okay?
I know a lot of things already but I really want to hear what all you couldn't live without immediatly after surgery, which things were the best. Give me some good ideas what to buy when I go shopping tuesday.
Thanks

Good morning!
I'd wait on the scales until next month, I only used them to weigh meat and you won't be eating that for quite some time. Ground meat, when you can eat it will be able to be measured by the tablespoon.
So, here's what I'd suggest
Baby spoons----easier to eat slowly, and if you can only have a couple of tablespoons, it makes it last longer. Cheap...wal-mart---couple of bucks for 6 or so
Small food processor to chop deli meats really fine. I think I could have this at about 3 weeks. I'd put one slice of deli ham or turkey into the processor, a tsp of mayo, a little shot of mustard or relish and blend away. You can get this at wally world too, under $20.
Measuring spoons---probably already have those though
Magic Bullet. Great food processor/blender, but a bit pricey. They have them at Linens and Things for about $60. Very powerful and fast, great for blending protein drinks with ice. I used the heck out of mine for the first couple of months, now I hardly use it at all. You might look on e-bay for a used one.
Dr Baker will tell you what vitamins you need. Usually Flinstones (or wal mart brand) chewables are mostly recommended.
I bought a bunch of creamed soups. Fat free cream of chicken, potato, etc. Bought too many....takes too long to finish a can if it's a TBS or two at a time, so don't go crazy. I ate a lot of poached and soft boiled eggs. Sugar free, fat free puddings and Jello.
How are you set for your protein? Vitalady.com has a great selection of samples you can get for about $2 each. Until you find out what you like, I wouldn't buy a bunch of this either, it's expensive and you don't want to spend money on something you aren't going to like. GNC carries good proteins and if you SAVE THE RECEIPT and don't like it, you can take it back. Wal-mart also has some protein supplements that I hear people like, but again you won't know until you try them. If you get the vanilla flavored you can add frozen fruit (with the doc's ok) to flavor it, or buy the sugar free flavored syrups to doctor them up.
Well, hope all this helps. I know it's a lot to take in, but we're here for you!
Take care
Susan
Get sugar free jellos they are premaid at walmart. Also, chicken broth, I lived on it and it's easy to warm up a couple of tablespoons of broth every few hours. A couple of weeks out, you'll get cream of wheat. For sure get splenda. Since my surgeon kept me on liquids for weeks and weeks, I didn't need a food processor but I did get a blender to make me protein shakes. I buy my protein powder at walmart, I think it's about eleven bucks a cannister. I still take the flintstones and my calcium comes from tums.
