Refried beans

I know this a weird post but you will all become used to that with me.  Are refried beans ok to eat during the soft diet time of life?  Fat free of course - but they are not on the list of foods Jo Beth gave me and I couldn't remember if that list is suppose to be ALL I'm suppose to try at this point.  I am planning my meals for me and the family this week and was planning to cook mexican one day and instead of two seperate meals - I was going to try and use the refried beans, fat free cheese, etc for a meal. Then I couldn't see anywhere that they were approved.  I know, I know - I'm crazy and more than a little obsessive but I also don't want to blow a gasket from the chest down - if you know what I mean!  If you've had any experience with refried beans - let me know.

Hey Angie, I don't see refries on the list for the "first four weeks".  I stuck to the diet like glue for the first couple of months, but I know I ate Taco Bell refries, but not sure if it was this soon, maybe a couple of weeks later. I remember DH getting me an order and it took three or four meals (1-2 TBS at a time) for me to eat that one little order of beans.  Those Taco Bell beans are still a meal I'll go to if I'm out and about and need to eat. At eight months out I'll eat about half of the beans then put the meat only from a taco into the beans and mix it up for a boost of protein. If you want to try them, I'd make very sure they are very  pureed, fat free, and not too spicy or thick.  You might want to put a few shreds of low fat cheese on them to add some more protein too. Hope they work out for you.

Susan

I didn't have soft foods for two months out and when I did, refried beans were not on the list.  I did try them, got sick, and waited a few more weeks and retried them and they were okay, but only a couple of bites.  Stick with what is on your list and you will lose the weight quickly. Instead of refried beans, go with some good ole cottage cheese or cream of wheat.  Yummy.

Thanks for all your responses.  I've been playing around this week with some of the things on the list trying to make sure I get all the things I need but with a little variety.  I appreciate your sharing your experiences with the refries!  AT

I ate the refried beans but not until probably week 6 or 7.  My surgery was 9/27 and I know quesadilla (FF tortilla, FF cheese and FF beans with FF sour cream and salsa) became a staple before end of November cuz I was telling a friend who had surgery a month or so before me and she had not thought about eating tortillas.  ANother post about sticking to the approved foods indicated thats how you lose more weight and thats very true.  Believe me you'll pay if you cheat (hmmmm ..... wonder how I know that!) From JoBeth's list I know my saviors were:                     BLue Bunny Lite 85 yogurt                    Sugar free pudding made with skim milk                     non-fat cottage cheese                     potatoe soup made with skim milk

POACHED EGGS (my breakfast EVERY day is 1 poached egg on 1/2 piece of wheat toast with 1/2 slice 2% cheese.... YUMMY... also easy to order out, except for the low fat cheese)                     melba toast Find the proteins you like and go from there!!

I haven't tried potato soup - really hadn't even thought about it.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I decided not to stray from the list until I see Dr. Gibbs on the 5th.  I'm in Alabama at my sister's house this weekend and she and her husband have been so sweet getting me anything that I ask for.  He's gone to the grocery store 5 times getting stuff so that I can eat.  I keep telling them I'll be fine - she has potatoes and cottage cheese, what else do I need really!  I really appreciate the suggestions on foods - nothing has really tasted right for the last couple of weeks.  AT
