What's going on??
Ok, so I had a 24 hr. stomach bug on Monday. A lot of
all day long. I couldn't eat or drink anything for 24 hrs. Tuesday I felt better and was able to drink, but not eat much. Wednesday, I was able to eat and drink normally with no problems. Thursday, I wasn't able to eat much but could drink...I tried to eat dinner Thursday and just threw it away, eating made me sick. Today, (Friday), I felt fine this morning. Started out the day as usual, worked out for an hour (thanks Susan H. for the pep talk), ate a protein bar for lunch, everything was fine. I tried to eat dinner and again, it made me sick. I took 3 bites then was in pain for about 30 minutes until it finally came back up. That was at 5pm, it is now after 11pm and I still cannot eat or drink anything without it coming back up.
When I had the stomach bug Monday it was really bad. I was sore for two days from all the vomiting, or dry heaving rather because there was nothing in my stomach to come up. Is it possible I could have damaged my pouch/stoma in some way because of it? Or do y'all think it is still just sensitive after being so sick? Thankfully I was able to get in all my fluids and vitamins today before getting sick, but only half my protein. If I'm still having this problem Monday I will of course call my surgeon, just wanted to see if anyone had any idea what might be going on? Its not a good feeling. And I promise I'm not eating anything I'm not supposed to...if that were the problem I wouldn't be asking about it
Take care,
Denise

Denise,
Hey, first of all, sorry you are feeling so bad. I was sick 2 weeks ago, pollen had me then it moved into a respiratory infection. (Im asthmatic) Everything I ate came back up b/c I was coughing, when I called my NUT she put me back on liquids, and said not to worry about solids, to just try and get my fluids in. And vitamins of course. It was not fun, felt like I was in the "just home from surgery phase", but it helped me not to vomit. I was vomiting from eating and then the horrible coughing, it would bring the food back up in my esophagus and then it was over. I was gonna lose it, but liquids didnt do that as bad, as long as I sipped!! I was so mad, b/c I couldnt get my protein in, but I got my liquid in. I was also able to take normal drinks (in moderation) again, and had to start over w/sipping.
Hang in there and Im with you, Id call the NUT, but until Monday, maybe liquids is your way to go. Again, totally different reason for vomiting, but still, vomiting just the same. And one way to look at it, liquids dont hurt the throat as bad coming back as food does. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
I am in Warren every Wednesday morning, and come to Monticello alot of those mornings, looking for something to do. I bring my mom to dialysis in Warren, get there around 6:30 and leave around 11. If you are free on Wednesday mornings and ever wanna meet for water sometime, let me know. Would be great to meet someone close that has been where I am. Hope all goes well, keep us posted.
Rhonda

Man, Denise you've been through a rough week, haven't you? I"m sure there are lots of things that can be going on, and I'm glad you plan on calling Gibbs on Monday. I think, even if you're feeling better a chat with Carrie wouldn't hurt!
There is a situation where scar tissue forms around the stoma(the opening from the pouch) and prevents anything from going through, so it all comes back up. It's repairable, and from what I've heard not at all a fun thing to have happen. I'm not trying to scare you, but I do think it wise to call Monday no matter what. If it's nothing, at least you'll put your mind at ease.
Take it easy this weekend, I suggest baby sips of liquids and stick with soft foods. Maybe your little pouchie just needs some TLC.
Know we're here for you, Take care
Hugs
Susan
Thank you both for your replies. I've stuck with liquids and soft foods all weekend and I'm feeling much, much better. I think I'll give Carrie a call tomorrow anyway, just to make sure. I typically get the stomach flu once a year so I guess I'll know what to expect next time
Good news is I lost 4 lbs., but I do not recommend it as a way to lose weight!
Take care,
Denise
