Need some assurance

I meet with my PCP today - and I'm so nervous! I don't want him throwing up a road block but I'm really worried that he will. I don't have any co-morbid diagnosis - is it crazy to worry that I'm not big enough? I meet the qualifications set out by insurance which is a BMI of over 40 and if you have that you don't have to have a co-morbid condition (at least that's what they've said so far). I'm just worried that he will withhold the referral or not give me the diagnosis required for insurance. All this and I've not even been to the WLS seminar yet! I know that if I don't do this, my health is going to suffer. I've been trying for 10 years to keep the weight off but I'm still not sure that it will be "enough" in the eyes of my PCP. Any advice or suggestions on how to make sure I present this to him?

Why are you so sure he is not going to be behind you on this? Have you already approached him and he was not on board? You just go in there and tell him how important this is to you and that you have done a lot of research and you know what your getting into. I had researched this surgery for over a year before I went to my PCP and he was all for me having it done. I assured him I knew what was ahead for me. He did not tell me anything that I had not already found out on my own. You have to go in there and be sure of yourself. Good luck and let me know the outcome. Terri

WHEW! Thank you so much for your encouragement! He gave me my referral no problem. He did ask me a few things just to make sure I knew what I was getting into but once he realized I had done my research, he was satisfied. I'm so relieved! One step in the process behind me. I go to the seminar tomorrow so I'm excited to learn more information there. Thanks again - AT

I am so glad for you. See you worried for nothing. One step down and a bunch to go. Who is your insurance with?

I have BlueAdvantage - through Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I've talked to my HR person at the college and he said that it must be "medically necessary". So I called the insurance co. and they said that the requirements are a BMI of 40 ormore which I have. They didn't indicate that anything else was required but we'll see. Dr. Gibbs nurse will be sending off the pre-determination letter in the next couple of weeks so I guess I'll know soon.
