Insurance
I am very new to the idea of weight loss surgery, but I am wanting information on ways to pay for the surgery. How much does it cost if you pay yourself and also which insurances will cover it? I am a full time student right now and only my husband works. I would need an individual insurance plan. Thanks for the help!
There are a wide range of answers to your question. If you are thinking of buying an individual plan, you should be able to find out which ones cover WLS.
The surgery cost will vary depending on what type of surgery (RNY, Lapband, VSG, DS, etc.) and where you go. For instance, some people go to Mexico where it's alot cheaper. Whoever you choose, do your research and make sure the surgeon has LOTS of experience and a good reputation in your chosen type of surgery.
In regard to self-pay, be aware that any complications from WLS may not be covered by future insurance coverage. There have been people who have had huge medical bills due to complications who were self-pay . Hopefully you wouldn't have any, but you have to consider that possibility.
Also, I saw on the main board where someone got a grant for WLS. I think it was yesterday.
Good luck! There is a lot to learn and consider, but just jump in there and don't give up if it's something you really want. I am six years out and it has been well worth it.

Just from your response and my lack of thinking, I do not think I would want to take the private pay method. The surgery I am actually wanting is the Roux-enY Gastric Bypass(RGB). I have not found any individual plans that will cover gastric surgeries, since my research began about a week ago. I was wanting to know of the people who have had it and with an individual plan, what insurance did they have? Also, could someone tell me more about the grant thing? I actually have an uncle who gets many local grants for students, businesses, parks, etc. I may even be able to ask him. Thanks!
Here is the link on the Main Forum about someone getting a grant. She said it took a long time, but she finally got it.

You may be able to get some information from her. I didn't even know grants existed but apparently there are some obesity advocate groups gaining strength that are starting to give the grants.

Louise,
I saw that you are from Anniston. What is the deal with Dr. Freeman? I called the office today to confirm the time for my appointment on Monday and an answering machine said that the office was officially closed. Do you have any information about him closing his office? It seems very sudden without any notification.
