Artificial sweeteners
Hi everybody,
After RNY, can you use artificial sweeteners such as Truvia? I wonder if they still cause dumping.
Also, if you mash up a banana really really good, can you tolerate that after RNY or does it just depend on each individual person?
I am stocking up my protein drinks to have after surgery. Any other suggestions as to what I can go ahead and purchase ahead of time to prepare?
Thank you so much,
Kim

Hi Kim,
It's really exciting that your time is getting closer and closer. You are doing the right thing by asking questions and getting prepared, but do remember that your tastes could change after WLS so don't buy up too much of one thing.
I was able to use artificial sweetners with no problem. I'm not real familiar with Truvia, but as long as it doesn't have a lot of carbs or sugars then you should be fine.
Getting protein drinks is a good idea, but again don't get too many of one kind in case your tastes change drastically. I know of people who loved coffee and can't stand it now. Or the opposite. I used to love the flavor of chocolate and now find that even though I can eat small amounts of sugar, I now prefer a oatmeal or cinnamon snickerdoodle cookie (which I did not like before) to a chocolate chip which I loved before. I know there are other items, but I can't think of them now. But my tastes did change a lot.
Most of all get in good habits such as drinking water...sipping constantly and exercising. Those are the two things that will get you through. Of course not drinking 30 minutes before and after you eat. You won't be able to drink with eating at first, but eventually you will be able to. Don't start back any of the habits you should learn to live with. Those will be your downfall to stopping weight loss or weight gain after weight loss.
You are doing great. Hope you are doing well maintaining your BMI. You're in my prayers. Can't wait until you are a loser too!!

I don't use artificial sweetners so I'm not sure...I use Splenda in one recipe that I have for Peanut Butter pie....and I don't have issues with it--of course, I don't dump on real sugar either! Bananas are very high in natural sugar and carbs....some folks can handle them (I can, and have since very early out) and some people cannot. Most of this you learn through trial and error.
And Connie is right--your tastes may change drastically. I used to love egg salad, and now can't stand the thought of it! I used to hate Bloody Marys and now I love them (okay, not a good example, but I AM HUMAN AFTER ALL--AND A GIRL NEEDS A GOOD STIFF DRINK EVERY NOW AND THEN!!)
My doctor never recommended protein supplements---started out the gate with getting protein from food only. So I can offer no advice on those, but what Connie says makes sense....don't buy too much of any one thing.
You are wise to get as prepared as you can be! When it gets closer we'll tell ya what you must and should not bring to the hospital!

I've used Truvia, Stevia and agave and not had a problem with any of them. I will agree about not stocking up with too much. I drank chocolate flavored protein by Matrix for weeks and loved it then all of a sudden one day it was too sweet. I could barely get a drink down. I buy my protein from a local gym so if you can find a good source locally they may have samples you can try.
Before my surgery I went in and talked to the owner and he gave me about 8 samples of different flavors/types and I bought maybe 5 more and it gave me a good variety to work through. Some I poured down the drain but I found several that I liked enough to have a good supply when I need a shake to supplement my protein intake.
Good luck!!

I love truvia!! I am one of those who do dump and go into carb coma's and have not problems with truvia.
I can eat banana's usually not a whole, just too much volume.
Like the others have said don't buy too much pre-surgery. Our tastes really do change after surgery.

I can use any artificial sweetener and I don't dump on it. But I still dump on sugar, fat, and dairy!
I don't recommend stocking up too much either. I barely did the shakes for 3 months..........I hate a thick drink period so they were NOT for me.
I used broth and tofu more often than shakes!

Hey Kim
I never did the protein drinks... NUMBER ONE ,,,,grossssssssssss and I was told to get my protein from food which worked out well. I live by Splenda and before that Nutra Sweet ..No issues at all.
The protein I lived on at first was refreind beans with cheese in them, tuna , chicken salad , eggs Peanutbutter ,cottage cheese etc
You cant eat much at first anyway but that changes ,,,THe first 3 months of it my head couldmt fathom that 3 tsp at most and I was stuffed so naturally I ate 4...Throw up throw up and up lol
I learned fast that 3 tablesoons and then 2 hours later I could do it again.
WATER WATER WATER ,,,,I did unsweet tea with Splenda alot and exercise is the key to getting all that off in the 18 month window we have ...
You will have a bounce back of about 10%-20% as most do anyway after the 2 year mark so get all the lbs off you can in the first year ,,,VERY IMPORTANT as it doenst last forever sadly.. I wasnt to well informed so I learned alot on my own and through others ,,
I am not almost 7 years out and still in a 10 ,,HOWEVER , it is exercise at minimum 5 days a week for at least 30 and more like 45 min and I eat 5 - 6 small meals a day still and am mindful of what i eat..
I cant eat rice at all nor pasta ...
My tastes changed so much it was crazy ..so be careful of loading up ...I did and it was a waste.
After all missy :) the stores arent gonna stop selling anytime soon and you can get it later ...KIDDING
Good Luck and SKINNY WISHES and please emai if you have other questions or psot here . I mainly lurk but I do lurk daily.
Hugs
