Sad, disgusted and need encouragement/advice (cross-post)

Ok, so I want to have WLS surgery - I need to have WLS surgery.  I jumped through the hoops that one CSR from my insurance (BCBS of AL) company told me and did the 6 month diet, I have co-morbid conditions, but my BMI alone is enough for surgery.  However, my insurance plan changed and excludes all bariatric procedures, so I did all that for nothing.... so it seems.

I have been researching self-pay prices for RNY and VSG but can't seem to figure out how to come up with the funds... I am married with kids still at home and a husband who is chronically ill and disabled (and high maintenance - dialysis 3 days/week, lots of meds, etc.).  But I really WANT this surgery. I WANT to be healthy!  I want to live a long time!

What are the options here?  The loans I've seen advertised have higher monthly payments than I can afford right now.  Someone has got to have some advice.... please.

Yes, I know I'm whining..... but I don't know what to do

Unfortunately more and more companies are excluding WLS from their plans.  While it is costly, I guess they don't realize the long term savings of having healthier employees.  Have you considered looking for a new job at a company whos insurance plan covers WLS?

My previous company covered it, but the one I am with now does not.

I personally would look for a job which provides insurance for WLS.
My second option would be to check with the office and see what financing options are available.
Third choice would be to look at foreign options as I hear they are much cheaper.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Les,

I fought BCBS for 3 years in order to have WLS.   Appeal to the insurance company you have.  Explain to them that, as stated above, they will spend more on your health without WLS than they will afterwards.  It makes absolutely no sense to me.  I know you are totally frustrated.  I am not a lover of insurance companies LOL.

You take care and I wish you all the best in your fight for WLS.
