Any suggestion for me?

Hi everybody,

I need suggestions please.  I will be having RNY in January or February 2011 if everything goes as planned, and I am approved by BCBS of AL.  This is what I have done so far:  I have stopped drinking anything excep****er and occasionally milk.  I was drinking a LOT of coffee and cokes.  I am increasing my protein daily and eating more fresh fruit whereas I used to early fruit only rarely.  I am sipping water constantly and it seems to have curbed my appetite some.  I have not exercised any yet because of torn ligaments in my left foot.  What else can I do to help me prepare for success?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

Kim, it sounds like you are doing everything I would suggest.  I do remember that I actually managed to lose weight while getting approved for the surgery.  I don't know how I did it but it sure was good.  I think dropping the cokes helped.

I think my only other suggestion is just to work on your mental end of things.  If you're already changing eating patterns, that's great.  Try to realize what makes you eat - depression, happiness, lonliness.  I never realized that I eat for all the wrong reasons.  I very sledom get hungry but I certainly can put it away when I'm happy or sad.

I do remember reading a lot of profiles from this website and looking at before and after pictures.  That really kicked up my excitement.  I'll still go back and check out before/after pictures.

Just call on us when you have a questions after the surgery.  I had a lot of questions and a lot of scary moments.  Like the time I swallowed chewing gum.  I thought I was a goner.  LOL  I seldom ever chew gum anymore.  I remember one time I had eaten rice and it got stuck (that's my opinion).  Anyway, I couldn't eat or drink for almost a week.  I was petrified yet never thought to call my doctor.  I came here to the board to find out what was happening.  Fortunately it got better and everything was ok.

So glad to have you here with us!!!

Girl!  You are so good!  The only other things I can offer are lay off sugar, don't drink liquid 30 minutes before, during and 30 minutes after meals and give up all carbonation....do whatever exercise you can (get in the pool if that is an option, do yoga, abs and arms....).

Sounds like you are off to a great start!  I've got a spot warmed up for you on the loser's bench!

Debbie,

You actually made me laugh about the chewing gum, LOL....that is just too funny.  I would be scared too though.  My ex-sister-in-law had open RNY back in July 2000.  She used to have rice get stuck too.

Kim,

Thank you for the suggestion about the pool.  My brother has one that I can use, and he works two jobs so he is not home very much at all so he cannot see me in a bathing suit, LOL.  Works for me!!!  Of course, he loves me just like I am which is wonderful.  I am 43, and he still tells people I am his "little sister".

I hope everybody is having a wonderful night tonight.

Love your enthusiasm and dedication. You are going to do great.  Great advice already given....only thing I can add is to start trying out some protein shakes and protein bars to see what you like.  I even found a company online that sell protein chips and snacks.....been a long time since I ordered and can not remember their name.   But if you search around, you might be able to get some free samples!  I know I did!

Leslie,

I never even thought about that.  That is a really good idea to find out what I like before I need it because then I won't feel like going out and trying to find what I like.

I have already bought some of the Carnation Instant Breakfast.  My nutritionist told me to get those.  I have not tried them yet, but I am going to soon.

My kids are worried to death because Mama is not drinking cokes or coffee.  They are wondering if Mama is okay, LOL.

My ex-husband came over yesterday to see our little girl, Becca, because she has been sick, and he saw me drinking water and he said, "Are you okay?  Is there anything you might want to tell me?"  He thinks I am pregnant because the only time I could drink water was when I was pregnant.  (We had four children together.)  Honestly, the thought of drinking water used to make me sick, but I am drinking it now, and I am not pregnant, LOL.  It is just funny what people notice when you try to change a bad habit.
