Help with a couple of things

1.  I tried jogging a couple of times on the treadmill and I really love.  I can only do it about a minute every 10 minutes but it feels so good and gets my heart rate up.  I did notice this morning that my right knee is a little achy and I'm wondering if it might be the jogging.  I mean I'm a big girl and that's a lot of weight comin down on these dogs.  What's your opinion?  I hate to stop but I do not want to get to the point where it hurts to walk.

2.  My blood pressure is all over the board.  I can't seem to get it regulated.  This morning it was 144/102.  I cooled down and took my shower and then we took it again and it came down to 134/98.  Thirty minutes had passed since my workout.  This isn't the first time this has happened.  It's usually that top number that is high but this week it's been the bottom one.  I started taking a new bp pill about 2 weeks ago and I'm just wondering if maybe it isn't strong enough.  I'm going to call my doctor's office this morning for some advice.

3.  Let me enourage all of you to get moving.  Even if its walking up and down the stairs several times a day.  I can't emphasize enough how much better I feel.  It's amazing.  I mean I was at the point where I needed an afternoon nap to get through the day.  I'm on B-12 shots so I shouldn't be getting that tired.  Since we joined the gym I'm full of it - energy that is!!!!!

Thank you all for being here and for your support.

Hey Debbie,

Congratulations on being able to run for a minute at a time. That is quite impressive. I was training for my first 5K in August (mostly with walking and a little running). My left knee began hurting. I stopped the running because I had been told my knees were crap before my surgery. Maybe instead of running you could just walk really really fast. That would make it easier on your knees.

I would definitely call the doc about the bp. It is nothing to let go for too long. I wish I could take some of your high and mix with my low. Together we would have perfect bp's. Mine is usually 90/50. Luckily, it doesn't make me tired.

I have been walking in the evenings and will continue to do so. Wish I could walk in the mornings, but I am so not a morning person. It's amazing how much more energized expending energy makes us. The more we do the more energy we have to be able to do.

Keep up the good work!!!!

Definitely call the dr about the BP issue!  I am so proud of you for getting on the exercise band wagon!  I love it too now (well, I love the way it makes me feel!).  I started jogging some when I was still quite heavy and it bothered my right knee.  Have you tried a knee stabilizer band?  You can get them at drugstores....it helped mine.

Bottom line, if a stabilizer doesn't help, then pain means stop.  Give it a rest and if you try again and if the pain returns, you might want to stop jogging/running....speed walking is a great alternative and just as challenging-easier on the knees.

Kim, I did go and buy one of those elastic stabilizers and it is helping.  This morning when I got to work it was just a little tender but it wasn't getting better so I ran to the drugstore and now it feels much better.   I'll wear this when I go to the gym.  I think it will help!!

I have a call into the docs office but not returned call yet.

saladshooter...

walk DON'T RUN!  Swim, eliptical, or stationary bike.  Pool running is okay because the full weight is not coming down on the joints.

Hope your doctor had some good insight on your B/P.

MUCH LOVE!

Lisa

How about trying re-fried beans from Taco Bell?? I know that all doctors are different. Mine did not specify going to soft foods. After 2 weeks I was allowed to eat anything - just very small portions. Don't do carbonated drinks as I've heard they can stretch your pouch but besides that it's just wasted calroies. I know that I ate crackers with no problem but again, on my doctors ok. I used to buy the child's spagetti in the little round cans. That's all I would eat at lunch but still, that's now really much protein. You need that protein. One thing I could not eat early out was rice and beef and chicken. They would get stuck and I would be in pain for hours. That's why they say soft foods. Surely they gave you a list of soft foods??? If not, go online and look it up. There's bound to be more. I also ate baby food (mostly the desserts). LOL I'm still not sure if that was ok or not. You can take some foods and puree them. I wish I could be more help but I'm at work now and can't stay much longer.
Blessings,
Debbie

Every food you choose should be based on the protein you can get from it.  Beans are an excellent source.  Eggs are great too-make egg salad.  I had shrimp salad, tuna salad, chicken salad and egg salad and of course beans.  You can grind them up in a blender, food processor or a magic bullet (great for small portions).  Greek yogurt is good-you'll want to use the plain and add some pureed fresh fruit to it for sweetness.  Sugar free pudding is soft, but doesn't really contain much protein.

If you overeat, you wont "ruin" you surgery.  However, this is the critical time where you MUST change your bad habits and FOLLOW your surgeon's orders.  You are too early out to know when you should stop eating (believe me, later on, you'll know when you've had the last bite), so measure the portion your doctor/nut recommended and don't eat more than that--and remember, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!  I wish you much success on your journey and we are here if you need us.
