Hi everybody,

I just started this process today.  I have BCBS of AL so it will be at least 7 months before I will have a surgery date.......that is IF I am approved.  Any advice or encouragement would be appreciated.  I have decided on RNY.  I am in Athens, AL.  Is there anybody near me?

Thanks,

Kim

Where to begin!  Congratulations on making a life changing decision.  I would not change a thing about the choices I made, and my journey has been incredible.

1)  you came to the right place!  This website has all the info you need, and this board some of the most remarkable people I've met.

2)  are you sure your insurance plan covers bariatric surgery?  If you aren't, call them tomorrow.  If you are, call them and get the links to the BCBS documents that outline the requirements.  Make checklists to ensure you dot your "i's" and cross your "t's".  For instance, for the 6 month supervised diet, the day of the month of your last appt (#7) must be the same as the first or later in the month--and 6 months must've elapsed in between.....so many people are forced to go to one extra appt because they don't know this.

3)  start exercising--NOW.  I believe the number one reason I sailed through my surgery and recovery is because I started working out (yes, at 324 lbs I did it) 6 month prior to surgery.

4)  do your homework.  "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" is a good book to read.

5)  have an idea of the surgery you want, but don't be dead set on it.  Let your surgeon also guide you on what they recommend for long term success for YOU.  I thought I wanted a lap band until I met with my surgeon, he actually guided me to the RNY as the best choice for me.

Bottom line-follow the insurance requirements to the letter.  I did, and once I was submitted I was approved in 3 days.  Best to you, and we are here if you need us.

I'm not too far away towards Huntsville. Just in case you didn't know there is a by-pass group that meets twice a month at the Hsv Hospital Wellness Center on Govenors. (I'm with the band group there) There are many many wonderful folks that are involved in that meetings. The by-pass group meets the first Thursday of the month at 6 and I believe the 3rd Wed of the month at 10.

Good luck!
