"...Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)
When Samuel went to find the new king, he saw Jesse's oldest son, Eliab, and decided within himself that he would be the next king. He was evidently a man of stature and looked much better qualified than David did for the position. However, God said no. He went through every one of Jesse's sons and then finally asked him if that was all of them. Jesse said he had one other son, David, who was tending the sheep. David was brought before Samuel and of course the rest is history. What a wonderful history it is. David did not seem to be qualified in man's eyes to be king. However, in God's eyes, he was. His heart is what God was looking at. Not his stature, his military experience or any other qualifications...just his heart. When God looks at our hearts, what does He see? What can He qualify us for? We can change our outward appearance and be absolutely gorgeous, but if we do not change the inward man, we have done nothing but painted over rust. Sooner or later, that rust is going to eat through that paint. However, when God changes us, He grinds out and removes that rust and cleans us up and makes us beautiful. We can change our outward appearance, but only God can truly change our heart.
