pre-surgery psych sessions

I'm aware that part of the approval process requires a psych evaluation.  Naturally, I intend to get that done before attempting to get approval.  But, I have another question...

And may I just add THANK YOU SO MUCH to all of you that share your stories and experiences.  This site is a treasure trove of information!

my questions:

Psychological issues can play a role in obesity.  Someone can eat eat because of stress, depression, anxiety, etc.  I am considering trying to get psychological help during this 6 month insurance journey because I truly do not want to mess up this surgey if I am fortunate enough to get it.  No, I don't think I'm "crazy" or anything like that but I'm afraid of emotional eating sabotaging my surgery.  Soooo...

Did anyone here tried it?

If you do try therapy and your insurance company becomes aware that you sought help are they likely to take it as a sign that you'll fail?

Post-opers... if any of you used to grab a bag of chips when you were stressed, what do you do now?

I know this is kind of personal so if anyone chooses to answer via private message, I will certainly keep your screen name and comments to myself.

Thanks!

Hey there and welcome to the Bama Board!!!!  I did have a psych eval prior to surgery, but it was just that once.  I have not had anything since surgery.  I am 4.5 years out and have lost around 130 pounds.  I was a constant snacker prior to surgery.  I have caught myself snacking at times, but I prefer protein bars LOL.  Now I am not saying that is good, because I could eat them all day, but that is my preferred snack.  I also still love protein shakes.  They are a great snack when at home and I can mix them in the blender.  As far as grabbing a bag of chips, there are not many chips that I just love any longer.  Most taste greasy to me and I hate grease now.  The baked ones are ok, but they are not that good to me either.   I do not know how your insurance company would feel about therapy, but it seems to me that they would think you are doing the right thing.  However, insurance companies are often weird.   Talk with your doctor and see what he/she advises.  None of us are crazy...we just all have an issue with food.  We love it.  I am sure some more will answer and help in ways I cannot.  I wish you all the very best.
