Ive been trying to do better with my eating, and strictly eating dense protein. But for lunch I'll have ham and a cheese stick rolled up with hot sauce. That goes down fine but if i add anything more dense, like chicken, pork, and even yesterday chef salad, it feels like a rock is sitting in my chest. the only way for me to ever feel better is to throw up. I cant even drink water because it comes back up....In November I'll be 5 years post op and its done it off and on for about 2 years, and i think that's why i went back to eating slider foods and foods that wouldn't sit like a rock. BUT I'm trying to lose this 40lbs and its so discouraging when i an only get in 3 bites of a chicken breast before I'm miserable.
I come here because you guys seem so knowledgeable, So if any of you have experienced this PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks!!

I can't say that I've experienced the 'same' thing, but I have noticed that I sometimes get full really, really fast.  And it's probably from too many sliders, too.    Maybe the trick is just to eat your 3 bites of dense protein, and wait.  Maybe later you can eat a little more?  I don't really know, just a thought.

I'm proud of you for working so hard on those 40lbs.  I'm trying, too!

Hilary I know just what you are talking about.   Before surgery I could eat a ton of slider foods and not much meat or dense protein.  I have made a point of cutting out 99% of the slider foods since the surgery and have dropped about 15#.    It is so hard to try and eat just protein but I am making me do it.  Call you surgeon and let them know what is going on.

Hi Hilary,

You described exactly what happens to me.  I know what you are talking about with the dense meats, especially chicken.  Some days I can eat it just fine.   But then other days it gets stuck and I have to throw it up or at least try to.  Usually when I have a problem with it, I have allowed myself to get really hungry or I'm doing something else while I eat and eat too fast with bites that are too large.  I find I HAVE to take the teeny bites and chew, chew, chew like I did in the beginning if I don't want meats to get stuck.

Do you think maybe you are taking larger bites then you shuold and maybe swallowing the chicken, pork etc. before chewing it small enough.  I also know for myself, when I got used to eating those slider foods , I can eat larger bites and don't have chew so much.  This has help create the bad habit of not chewing the denser meats enough.

Does this make sense to you Hilary.   I also went to slider foods.  According to the 5 day pouch test, the dense meats are supposed to make you uncomfortable when you eat too much or if you don't chew it enough.  I had my surgery in October 2004 and I know then I was told I would always need to take small bites and chew, chew, chew.  I know I found I could eat those slider foods and decided I didn't have to do what I was told...then the weight gain.  So, just like I was told and I agreed to do in the beginning, I know if I want to be at goal weight (or at least close) I have to follow the rules...including vitamins and drinking 64 ozs water per day minimum.  I do great with my vitamins...it's the nutrition, water and the thing I think of as a 4 letter word instead of an 8 letter word-EXERCISE that I struggle with!

I did finally loose back down from 218 lbs to flucuating between 175  to 180
lbs.  My goal was 150 and I was there 1 day. LOL  I've been in counseling (great), was put on medication to help me sleep through the night (not a sleeping pill/an antidepressant that helps me relax enough to sleep.  Now I don't night eat all night long.  It keeps me from getting up and going the kitchen to get something to eat.

I hope this has helped in some way.  I pray that God wil bless you during this time of struggle for you.  You can do it!!

Christ's peace,

I think you are right. i eat too fast, and dont chew good enough. i will definitely watch that from now on!

Congrats on losing down again! my ultimate goal is 150! ive never saw it. i saw 165 for a day lol. I really liked myself there tho and was happy. Im at 203 this morning. ive lost 10lbs. So i WILL get there it just may take longer than i hope for!

May i ask which medicine your on at night? I wake up numerous times a night and find myself in the kitchen, half asleep, eating junk. Its an awful habit and i wish i could stop but its l ike i have no control. luckily i havent done it in a few weeks but ive been very conscious of it!

I still get that sick feeling when I eat dense protein, too.  I had not realized until you mentioned it that I have regressed to slider foods and am picking up a few pounds that I could and need to lose.  Sorry that I cannot help, but thank you for helping me.

You are more than welcome. Its easier to let in those slider foods because they go down so easy. im a victim of it too!

I'm glad you posted this Hillary. I think I'm going on 8 years and I still have problems with some meats. Chicken is by far the worst. I very seldom eat it that I don't have to go throw it up. How disgusting. I take small bites and chew a lot simply because I know if I don't that I will lose it. Even then I sometimes have problems. I've also noticed that if I try to eat rice and chicken together I dump BIG TIME. Rice and my tummy do not get along.

Like you, I do choose slider foods entirely too often and I know that's why I'm not losing weight. I haven't gained but about 6 pounds in the past 2 years. Those come and go but I have to watch it every day and I do weigh myself every day just so I can stop and evaluate when the scale goes up more than 2 pounds.

Right now it seems like I can't eat but a few bites before I get miserable so I stop but then about an hour later I'm hungry again. I'm eating a lot of cheese and beans right now and will see how that does for a few days.

We can do it Hillary. I think we have the willpower and the want to.
