Wednesday Hugs
David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands." As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. (1 Samuel 17: 45-50)
David was a shepherd. His father had sent him to the site to take his older brothers some food and supplies. They were among the ones one had been running from Goliath for 40 days. He taunted them for 40 days, laughing and chasing them away. How many times I have ran from a problem. It was more than I wanted to face, so I ran. However, David was not afraid. He tried on Saul's armour, but because Saul was such a large man and David was smaller, it did not fit. How often I have tried to solve a problem the way someone else suggested only to figure out, it didn't fit the situation and God had the answer. David picks up 5 stones, his staff and takes his sling. Goliath taunted him and made fun of him. Our situations often do that to us, if not literally, at least in our minds. They can become giants in our heads. David told Goliath that he would kill him, that he would cut his head off. Goliath laughed at him. He had the best of weapons, but David had the ultimate weapon...The Lord Almighty. As history records, David did kill Goliath, he did cut off his head, and he did save the Israelites. David had faith that God would take care of the giant...and God was faithful. God will handle our giants for us if we only let Him and not try to handle them ourselves or allow someone else to sway us into handling things their way. Trust in God to get rid of the giants in your lives.
BTW....do you know why David picked up 5 stones??? It was not because he thought he would miss with the first one...Goliath had 4 brothers standing there and David was prepared.
These are wonderful thought starters for the day--you have become a big part of my morning devotion. Here is a big hug right back at cha.
