New to site, could use some help
Hello!
I'm just starting to go through the process of getting gastric bypass surgery, I was hoping I could get some help from those of you who have already been through this, both with my insurance as well as maybe answer a whole slew of questions I still have about life after surgery.
Right now though I'm just trying to focus on doing what I have to do in order to get approved for surgery. I have Aetna and I'm supposed to go through the three month multi-disciplinary thing, which I honestly don't think I understand fully, I was hoping someone who might've already done it could shed some light on this.
From what I understand, I need to see my PCP, a nutritionist, get involved in some kind of exercise program, and work on behavior modification. I've already seen the nutritionist, I finally found a Dr. that's willing to help me with this, but I'm confused about the last two things. My specific questions are:
1. Do I have to join a gym?
2. Would physical therapy count?
3. Do I have to see a phycologist or psychiatrist, or can simply joining this site be okay?
The insurance lady at the surgeon's office didn't seem to know a lot about this plan, although she said that she had another lady do it and all she did was go to a wellness center and talk to a "buddy" on this web site.
Anyways, sorry for being so long winded. I just don't want to spend the next three months working towards this only to find that I'm not doing it properly.

Welcome to the board! Most important advice I can give is this: get on the phone with a rep from your insurance and ask them your questions and keep asking until you understand, and insist they send you the documentation so you can read it your self. Many insurance companies will look for any reason to deny you WLS-so it is best to know up front.
Just my two cents--again, welcome!

Unfortunately I can't answer your questions. I also had BC/BS and my surgery was so long ago that I didn't have to do much of anything at all except have my regular MD recommend me as a candidate. I didn't have to do special diets, no nutrition classes, no psch evaluation, etc. My suggestion is that you ask questions to your insurance company. Keep calling until you find someone who will help you. It can really get aggrivating from what I've heard from others but don't give up.
Oh yeah, welcome to the Bama Board.
