RNY and steroids?

I know I have not been on in quite some time. The last year has been eventful to say the least. But this is the first time I've been really sick in a very long time. After the second doc yesterday. The ENT wants me on steriods for my vertigo. He believes I've picked up a viral infection that has made it difficult for me to get better after this bout with vertigo which usually only last a few days with meds.
I'm just wondering if anyone has taken steroids since RNY surgery. Both the doc and pharmist feel confident methylprednisolone 4mg once a day is safe.
I just need a vote of confidence
Oh and I've lost 112 lbs. Just forgotten how to update my sticker. lol

I had to take steroids for a really bad case of poison ivy.  The doc prescribed the "14-day 'Roid" plan....massive doses, and gradually weaned off of them over the course of 2 wks.   There was no problem with pouch issues, however, they did cause insomnia and I did feel hungry and jittery while on them.  The side effects were worth it - the poison ivy was really bad.  Your dosage is so low that you may not have any side effects at all.
Good luck.

Thanks so much! I was concerned about taking something new since my surgery. It helps to know someone has taken it with success.
I have taken it before for the same reason you had. That is pure missery. I'm much more careful working in my yard since that bad case of poison oak. The sad thing is I don't even have either poision oak or ivy in my yard. So the wind was blowing my way that day.

Just giving you some more information on steriods.. I was on them 6 months for migraines. I got blocks twice a month and took some by mouth. I'd have to check on the dosage however, side effects include weight gain. I would speak openly with the doctor about a time frame and dosage.
After gaining almost 40lbs in 7 months I switched doctors to another neurologist who in his opinion the steriods were not only going to make me "big as a house" (his words) and I still had  my migraines. (well it did lessened the amount of time I have them so the lesser of two evils maybe?)
That being said please be careful. I'm praying for you!!

Hey Julie,
I sure hope your migranes are better. I had them before I had my hysterectomy none since then. Thank you for praying for me. I actually feel better after just the first day of 6 (4mg) pills. I only take 5 today and 4 tomorrow and so on with less each day. So hopefully this is not going to be an ongoing thing where I have to take them everyday forever. I don't have these bouts with vertigo often. I think all the wet weather didn't help any. Plus I found out I'm anemic and working in the public unloading dusty trucks once a week with all the chemicals. So, hopefully not being in that enviroment will help. Thanks be to God, He made a way for me to be able to quit my job and be home for my family. Which is my hearts desire, but well of course.
I did check my blood sugar and it's up to 122 today. I had forgotten what it does to blood sugar. I know that's not real bad. But it's higher than mine has been since my RNY surgery. So I sure hope I don't have to take them over a long period of time.
I remember the last time I took them I did gain a bunch of weight. And my face got soooo round. I was so disgusted with myself. It was just before my daughters wedding. So I tried hard not to be in many pictures cause I just hated what I looked like. Now I've lost so much weight I could use a little roundness in my face. LOL Never happy with the way I look! But oh so happy about not being so fat and not having to take so many meds because of the weight.
Thanks so much for your reply.

Congrats on your success and being able to stay at home with your family!!! That's awesome! God is so good.
My husband's aunt started chemo a few weeks ago and they also put her on steriods. She is a diabetic as well and has gained some weight and she said her sugars are all over the place..
I was a type II diabetic and never had problems after the weight dropped. So please watch your sugars and 122 isn't bad but when you are at 80 and below that does surprise you.
I am glad to just be able to live life, eat again and work! lol
I work from home which I love. I am looking forward to the holidays ahead. I love the Thanksgiving to Christmas season to the first of the year! So many activities with our church and children. Then it calms down until spring then I am busy again with company, the lazy river and summer activities. Fall has slowed things down for me so I am looking forward to the holidays.
Wish I knew how to kick these migraines sure would help.

Deb..............I'm on steroids for vertigo and for muscle spasms.  I have gained 20 lbs.  Yesterday, I was down 7 pounds in a week.  They, the steroids, play havoc on your weight.  But, as our Dr.s tell us, it's the CHANCE of weight or the vertigo and pain.  I will keep you in my prayers.  Hope you feel better!  CONGRATS on the 112 lbs!!  That is awesome!!

Thanks Randall! I hope I won't have to be on them for a long period of time. I will be watching it closely. I know what it did to my mom. She didn't have a choice, she had to be on them to live. So she had problems with her weight. She never got as big as I was. She didn't like to cook! LOL
Thanks for your reply! I pray you'll be able to get off them soon.

Might as well put in my 2cents worth. I was on steroids last year as part of my cancer treatment. I took them for a couple of months and I did not gain weight. BUT, I'm sure the chemo helped take care of that. I couldn't eat much at all. Fortunately, I have been able to keep the weight off that I lost during my battle with cancer. I did see other cancer patients who did gain weight even though they were not able to eat much either. I'm not sure why some did and some didn't.

You are in my prayers.
