Why?
Why do doctors tell you what's wrong with you or what unusual surgical procedure they did on you while you are under the influence of anesthesia/pain killers and can't possibly remember anything?
I've been in horrible pain since I had a tooth removed. It was a baby tooth and everyone said it would be no problem coming out. Didn't have it fixed and crowned because one day it was going to fall out anyway. AND they had to surgically remove it because with my TMJ it is nearly impossible to numb my bottom jaw. So I have to be knocked out for almost any work done to my bottom teeth.
Anyway, I have been flabbergasted as to why I was hurting so bad. I knew I didn't have a dry socket, and could visually see nothing wrong. But I was out of Lortabs (lortab 10 at that), couldn't keep a frozen ice bag on hand and had already made a sock buddy.
So I called the doctor yesterday morning and he came to the office just to see me. It seems that he had to do some work not seen by x-ray. It LOOKED like my tooth was just ready to fall out and every one of my doctors couldn't understand why it wasn't loose in the least bit. Well, the dang thing had fused to the bone and he had to grind off the roots after he broke the tooth off! If all of us had known that I would have had the thing fixed! So that is why I have such deep-seated pain. According to the xray it was just hanging in the gum...was no where near the jaw bone.
Ok, all and good now, except I'm on some heavy duty pain killers and can't go to work today. He said today will be the turning point and it should start getting better. I'm praying it will. I had to go to training yesterday and managed pretty well thru the day except at test review time. I totally conked out. But I only missed two, thank God! And I can't work work with pain killers. They won't let you tote a gun under the influence...wonder why?
Now that I've written a book, I'll sign off!
Thanks for listening/ reading LOL

Ok, long story, I know, but I guess things just aren't always as they appear on xrays LOL in spite of the pain

All I can say is OUCH!!!! and I am praying you get better real soon!
You are correct about x-rays...goes the same about MRIs as well. When I had my back surgery, the surgeon didn't know the extent of my nerve "pain" until he opened me up. Following surgery, he came out to talk to Tim...telling him he understood why I was complaining with bilateral pain in my legs/hips for my nerves were very inflamed and irritated.
Sometimes you tell the Dr. and they act like you have a low threshold to pain or you are drug seeking, but that may NOT be the case. As in your tooth and in my back.
Again, I hope you get the pain relief you are looking for and that you heal quickly!

Hi, am a dental assistant, have been in the profession for over 35 yrs, have worked with several oral surgeons, and they tell all patients not to use straws, drink sodas, smoke or spit for at least 48 hours after surgery as not to damage the blood clot. Also rinse with warm sal****er several times a day, which should help with the soreness. With having to surgically remove the tooth, cut out the roots, the bone is going to be sore for a few days....be sure to drink plenty of water, keep hydrated, eat soft foods, etc. If you see swelling after a few days, be sure to contact the dentist. Just as with any surgery, there is going to be swelling, sorness.
I hope this helps, but I am sure he already told you all of these things. Best wishes. Sheila
