Iron

What type of iron should we be using (RNY) My Int Med Dr. called & told me to take  an iron pill 2 times a day but didn't say how much, and I think I read we don't absorb ferrous sulfate, but I'm not sure. I bought some at Wal-Mart that says equl to 325 mg ferrous sulfate.

I know I'm not in Alabama, but since you're my friend I saw the post.

I take two Bariatric Advantage chewable iron 29 mg each day. I take one in the morning and one in the evening.  It's a combination of ferronyl carbonyl iron and ferrous fumarate. I order mine online.

I don't know much about ferrous sulfate, but my non-WLS mom had some issues with it. It helped her get a few ulcers.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I certainly don't need anymore ulcers.  I bought a bottle at Wal-Mart but it said 65 mg equivalent to 3245mg of Ferrous Sulfate, which I read somewhere we don't absorb as well as other forms.

Since I am remarkably low in my hemoglobin, I am taking 650 mg of iron a day.  Surprisingly, it hasn't constipated me (tmi, tmi, I know!).  Hopefully when my blood levels are back up I can go down to 50 to 100 mg a day, which is a more normal dose.  What did surprise me was the doc's insistence that I take vit C with the iron as vit C helps with absorption.  New stuff to learn all the time!

Somebody is sure to beat me within an inch of my OH life, but let me tell you about me.

My doctor recommended Flintstones. I'm out 5 years now and have never had a problem until I quit taking the Flintstones. All of my bloodwork every year was good until last summer (4 years out) my iron was extremely low. I had quit taking vitamins all together...I know bad move.

He put me on the bariatric advantage iron pills. They gave me quite the upset stomach, but I persevered for 3 months. Out of desperation and the high cost of toilet paper, I went back to the Flintstones.

My iron was so high 6 months later that the doctor recommended I cut back to 1 flintstone instead of 2.

Another 6 months later, still good.

And once again another 6 months later, still good.

So to make a long story short, I'm gonna keep on with the 2 Flintstones I take everyday. A lot of people say they don't give us what we need, but I never had a problem until I stopped taking them. (I quit for like a year, I know bad bad me)

9 months of good bloodwork is 9 months of good news for me

I also take the Bariatric Advantage chewables, 29m. They taste really great. I had my surgery 5 years ago and I have had to have 2 iron infusions. I hope my levels are better when I have my next bloodwork!

Thanks Lisa, I was wondering how they tasted. I talked to my Int Med Dr. said I was irin deficient and to take 2 tabs a day, but good newa my potassium had gone back to normal, I guess the bananas did the trick.
