Amy are you taking any meds at night before you go to bed. Could you be having a reaction to something you have eaten?

I used to take Effexor XL and this was one of the problems with it.  There are medicines that are similar without that side effect ... and have less of an impact on the appetite as well.  My PCP switched me to Welbutrin.  If I had a physical love life that might be a problem, but otherwise it is less expensive, helpful, and no tingling.  That may be the issue.

Have you been VOMITING?

Are you taking vitamins?

Vitamin B shortages can cause this -- quickly-- if you've been malnourished.

okay, if you are having tingling in the legs or arms, do what the other folks said.  if the tingling is in "other" places then ENJOY!   but try not to have too much fun.

you know, after rny, your body gets to looking good and well, nows the time to start loving the new you.

Hi Amy,

How long have you been taking Effexor XL?  If you were taking before WLS, did you have this problem before?  I would think if it wasn't a problem before it would become a problem after WLS. I take Effexor XL and don't have this particular side effect.  But each person is different.

I would talk to my PCP about it.  I have never had low potassium, but have a friend who has tingling in legs if she doesn't eat a banana every day.  I used to have tingling in my legs if I didn't take a B-12 (2500 mcg) daily...an effect of low B-12...we need higher doses than the average person.  You can not get too much B-12...our body uses what it needs and the rest is passed through urine.

Definitely talk to your doctor tomorrow and tell him what is going on and do some research on the computer.  Just make sure you don't do anything without talking to your doctor about it.

Good luck sweetie, I will pray that you find out what is going on.

Also, the slowing down of weight could just be a normal plateau that we all went through.  Just keep doing what you are supposed to do.  Drink water, eat protein first, take your vitamins and exercise...what ever you can do right now at your level, even if it is a short walk!  You are probably losing inches...measure yourself!!  The weight loss will start again!!

I've been on Effexor XL for around 3 years. The only unpleasant symptom I have is feeling numb most of the time. I actually slept without tingling last night, but woke up with tingling and horrible pain in my right arm. I saw my doctor today who believes my tingling is a systematic symptom of low potassium and upped me to 3 pills a day. My potassuim was 3.0 today my dr. wants it 3.5-4.0. he believes the pain in my arm is a pinched nerve and there's not much he can do. Also regarding B12, I was told to take a 1000mg sublinguil B12 twice a week, is this enough?
Thanxs, Amy

Hello Amy,

I suffered from low potassium after surgery for over a year.  I am by no means a "normal" example of this surgery due to all my complications but i did want to jump in and add my experience with the tingling and pain.  My hands would actually cramp shut, someone would have to massage the palms of my hands just so i could move my fingers.

Please make sure you have a family doctor on board with all this that can help you manage the potassium and mag levels.  I dont want to bash a surgeon but IN MY EXPERIENCE the surgeon would not listen and just kept telling me all the things that i must be doing wrong.  I had to go in for regular potassium iv's because my body was not absorbing what i was taking by mouth.

It's all a vicious cycle also.  If you let yourself get too low then you will be nauseous and unable to tolerate food/water.  Then you'll become easily dehydrated, once again making you sick to your stomach...  So stay on top of it and dont be afraid to speak up with those doctors.  If you were to go to the hospital they won't even release you unless your potassium was over 3.4 so you can see that your level at the doctors office of 3.0 is dangerous.

Best of luck.  Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions i might be able to help with.  Hope you are feeling better soon!
