Based on that bariatric workshop you went to, what was the indicator for when B12 needs a more aggressive treatment? Mine is normal but only by a few points.

The (oncall) PCP told me that my calcium was normal but when I picked up a copy of my labs, it was low... not drastically low but below the normal guidelines.

I'm still on the mega doses of  Vitamin D and I have resumed my calcium but I'm wondering if I need more B12 that what I've been taking. I go back to the doctor in a few weeks and would like to be armed with information.

I'm not Louise...and I am butting in...

When I have a patient whose B-12 level is normal but borderline low, we supplement with IM injections.  We typically see side effects of low B-12 levels even when the levels are WNL but on the low side on normal.  Side effects can be shaky movements/unsteady gait, muscle weakness, spasticity, incontinence, low blood pressure, vision problems, dementia, psychoses, and mood disturbances.

If it were me and MY body, I would begin taking IM injections to bring the levels back up.
Just my humble opinion Gina...for I care about you!

Love ya,
Jackie

I'm not sure if my vision problems are B12 related or age related but I am definately experiencing mood and concentration problems. This can also be related to my low vitamin D which I am now on mega doses for. I requested that my antidepressant be changed but that has had little to no affect. .. leaving me to believe it's my labs and not my antidepressant.

I am taking SL B12 liquid (to speed absorption) daily and will continue this until I see the doc again. I'm just not getting better fast enough to suit me. Know what I mean?

Yes, I understand!
Do you mind me asking WHAT your lab level is (Vit B12)?  and what the lab date is?

My B12 was on the mid 200 range. The date was about two and a half weeks ago. I got a copy of my labs the day I left for Florida (Thursday).

SO sorry I left you...I started working.
If you were my patient, I would start supplementing you...just FYI.

That's OK. I've been in and out today, then took a nap. This heat is zapping my energy.

I am thinking that you are talking about that gray area I was telling you about.  That is the area between 200 to 400.  She said for gastric bypass patients that they should be tx.  I will call you later this morning.

That's it.. the gray area. The low cut off was 211 and I was above that but I am far below the high cut off of 911. I could increase it by 600 points and still not be considered high.

You do need tx and I would say now.  I hear there is a very good hematologist at the new medical mall at Fort McClellan.  I would call and see if he would see you with out a referral and try and get in with him.
