Good Morning all..... I wanted your input on revision surgery.
I am 2.6 years out of lap band and lost around 85 lbs and and back to only 50 lbs lost now. Ive been struggling with this band for so long. It's just a long story. My doctory recomended I go for a revision about 3 months ago and Ive been thinking about it and now I am pretty much ready to start my 7 month approval process. I paid for my band myself and now we think insurance will cover the revision. What are your thoughts on revision?
Hi Kena, I really hate to hear that you've had a hard time with the band. I've been very successful with it, and wish everyone the positive experience it's been for me. For me, the key has been finding that exact amount of restriction which is not easy, and takes a lot of patience. Not saying you have not done that, just saying that is what has worked for me.
Are you looking at revision to RNY or perhaps a different type of WLS? Or a different type band? I really can't give you any advise on it but would encourage you to work closely with your Dr. in whatever decision you make. I thik there is also a revision forum on OH.COM that might be helpful. I do have a lot of respect for your physician's practice. I have not met Dr Schmidt however did meet Dr Miles at one of his seminars a few years ago. I was very impressed especially at how "pro-band' he was. So many practices, especially 3-4 years ago, thought of the band as second best when that is not the case at all. You just have to pick the surgery that is right for YOU
Whichever way you decide keep us posted, I'd like to know the outcome and you will find support here on the Bama board!

Hi Kenna,
I don't know alot about lap band...just what I've learned from others I know who have had it. I know people who have had success and those who haven't.
Do you mind me asking a few questions? Why is the doctor wanting to do a revision? Is he talking about revision to RNY? or another band? Does the band need to be removed because it is cutting into the stomach?
Is it just not restrictive enough for you? I personally don't think the band would have worked for me in the beginning because I needed the dumping syndrome, and the restriction that I had no control over. But, even with that I gained over 50lbs back with RNY Gastric Bypass surgery, because I did not deal with my head issues and also I had sleep issues that I have now resolved.
I had a problem with sleeping an hour or two at a time and getting up all during the night and eating. At the beginning I could only eat sugar free popsicles...no big deal...10 calories each. When I later could eat other foods and listened to those who told me I was too skinny at 150 lbs...I would eat things with calories...but they were sugar free so that was okay, right? WRONG!!!
The doctor has now treated me for the sleep...I sleep all night and I have lost 26lbs in 6 months without changing much of anything as far as the way I eat during the day and evening. I wsn't overeating so much then...it was the late night or I should say all night eating.
Kenna, have you had any of those issues yourself or is your lapband truly not functioning, as in not holding saline solution for restriction.
Sweetie, I am not flaming you at all and I support you whatever your choices and you should always go with your doctor and his advice as you should now. I just want you to take a good honest look at yourself. Most of us who have suffered with Morbid Obesity not only overeat, we usually have head issues to go along with it! It's taken me almost 5 years after WLS to deal with mine and it is a work in progress!
Good luck with whatever you and your doctor decide is best for you. I will keep you in my thought and prayers and I hope I haven't offended you in any way. I do want to support you!!!
As Phyllis said, there is a Revisions Board you might want to check out. Also, whatever you do, please keep us informed so that we can support you.
***edited to say Kenna, I read your profile and I do see that you have struggled and maybe you should have had RNY Gastric Bypass...but sweetie, please get in touch with those emotional eating problems as you go through the honeymoon period if you do have a revision. You can gain it back after this surgery too. I weighed 309 on surgery day lost to 150 and gained back to 216 and now I'm down to 188-190 and need to get back go 150 for my health. I have to work at it now. It came off so easy after the surgery!*** GOOD LUCK
