I never did puree'd foods. I don't think I was required to.  It's been 7 years, so it's been awhile.  I loved refried beans with salsa a little bit of sour cream and cheese.  Also, loved liquids from hot and sour soup or egg drop soup.  YUMMY~  Mashed potatos and gravy was also good.  Once I was able to have meat I ate homemade chicken and tuny salads and I also loved homemade pimento and cheese.  Those were my staples way back then.  I also loved grits, cream of wheat and oatmeal.  I'm going to send you my phone number and you call me if you need ANYTHING.  If you just need to talk.....or need more suggestions, just give me a holler.

Hey Deb!

My surgeon's plan explains puree'd as the consistency of applesauce.  I think that can be accomplished inside the mouth if you chew well enough.  With meat, be sure it is very moist.  Even with chicken salad that I made with canned chicken meat, I had a 'stuck' issue.  Oddly enough I made it before that with leftover rotisserie chicken but used the dark meat and had zero problem.  There's definitely something to that moisture thing.  For me anyway.  Oh, and go very slowly with those bites.  I'd wait a good 2 minutes between them.  Again for me, even though I'm measuring my quantity, it's hard to tell when one bite too many will happen.  Last night I had fish for the first time.  Yum.  Very soft and flaky.  No problems at all.  Tuna salad goes down well for me also.   HUGS - Pat

Hi Deb,

Pureed does mean just that, pureed just like you would baby food.  When I was at that stage, I did not puree meats.  I'm with you.  I could not imagine pureed meats.  I do remember people talking about using babby food meats and adding seasoning to them.  You may want to try that, though to be honest I didn't.

I, like Elle, ate refried beans.  I would buy the can of fat free refried beans and add a little water to them and put them in my mini food processor.  I would heat them in the microwave in small amounts with cheese and add sour cream to them.  YUM, YUM!!!  I never could really do mashed potatoes myself.  My nutritionist in the BEGIN class before my surgery told us about people who made hot dogs with mustard, etc and pureed that and ate it!! LOL I thought that was gross, but she said you can puree anything as long as you add liquid to it to make it the consistancy of babyfood.

As far as making it puree by chewing it, do not try that at the puree stage.  Follow your doctor's food plan to the T.  You do not eat solid food until youget to the solid food stage.  At that point you will still chew everything to pureed consistance.  You will always want to chew everything that well to make sure it goes through the stoma without getting stuck.

You can do cottage cheese and puree it with some fruits such as pears or peaches.  That gives you protein.  You can add protein powder (unflavored) to oatmeal and put lots of cream in it and blend it.  I used to buy the Quaker Weight Control Banana Bread, they have a couple of flavors and I would mix the protein powder in my milk so it wouldn't clump and you don't even taste it.

I hope this has helped Deb.  I know you asking these questions has helped me to remember the things I used to do that I need to do again.  Please keep asking!  Good luck.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Christ's peace,
