How long after surgery can I begin exercising and get a personal trainer. My grandfather said he'd pay for 3 months of gym membership and a personal trainer for me as a gift. I was just wondering how long it took everyone to feel well enough to begin strenuous exercise.

I barely remember that far back but I'm thinking that it was January before I actually joined a gym and I had my surgery in October. I do remember walking like crazy those first few months. That's awfully sweet of your grandfather and it will really help!! I lvoed going to the gym and watching my legs tighten slim up. I loved the treadmill as well.

You probably need to check with your doctor just to see what he has to say!!

I had a membership at Benders and really would like to rejoin there. They didnt offer the personal trainer sessions when i joined. :(

Hopefully when i rejoin they do. I would go after work around 515 or so.

It will likely depend on how active you were before surgery.  I worked out consistently for 8 months prior to surgery (cardio and weights).  My doctor told me I could start back as soon as I wanted to-just no ab work till my incisions healed.  I was on my treadmill the day after I got home, albeit VERY slow!  I then did a little more each day, and then added weights back the 2nd week--1/2 the reps of before surgery and less weight.  I am now almost 4 weeks out and almost back to my regular workouts.  Bottom line--do what your doctor says, and LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!  If your body says stop, you should stop!  Some days I can't even do 1/2 of a workout and I am learning to accept it will take a while to be back in full swing!  Yoga is also very good and builds strengh and balance...but it does require a lot of core, so you'll want to wait a while before you do it.  Best of luck to you!  and it is so positive to be thinking about exercise!  THAT is what lifestyle change is all about!

I think this is a question you need to ask your surgeon, as each of us have different requirements for recovery.  My present "personal trainer" is Manual LaBor.  I have been digging trenches around my flower beds with a square blade shovel.  My front porch had some water problems because the flower beds where slanted toward the porch rather than away.  So I changed it. ....Good exercise!!!
