6 pounds and I feel like a failure!!!!

OK, so...
Not many of you know that I started smoking about 5 months after my surgery. I found that the menthol really helped me with the stomach pain I was having from time to time. Well, before you know it... bam I was 1/2 to 3/4 a pack a day. I smoked for a total of 6 years prior to my surgery. Not all in one shot, but 1-2 years here and there. Well, this Thursday will be 1 month that I am not smoking anymore. Frankly, I cannot stand the way it smells, makes food taste, etc...

BUT, now that I quit, I put on 6 pounds. I am up to 205 and I feel like a cow... I kid you not. I cannot believe that 6 pounds is making me feel like a POS. I can say the word cow, cause I was fat before. So, if you are reading this, and it is offending you, then just click the back button and move on. I am not here to please the weak hearted and those folks with thin skin. So, first off should I continue to beat myself like to a pulp? And, now I am on the verge of getting militant with my eating. You see, I have been snacking badly the last 3 weeks, and at this rate I will be in a Chic FiLa commercial in about 2.25 years. What is sucks is that I can actually feel the weight I have put on. So, the last two days I have only ate 1.5 meals a day...lol For those that know me, well, know that I have no in-between speed. It is either ALL or NOTHING (Unless, of course I had to wait for something, than, typically I have the patience of a saint, but I guess I don't have that anymore either).

SOOOO, I just needed to vent some and see if anyone here has quit smoking after RNY and how did they deal. Please, please... Don't get up on a soap box and tell me how bad smoking is... and how could I do this to myself after I had RNY.... If I didn't think it was bad for me, I wouldn't have quit and put this 6 freaking pounds on. So, please... no pointing at the fat guy, or he might just point back...

Hmmmm so...  in thinking about your post.  I have to offer the following opinions.  (Keep in mind, opinions are like...well you get the jest!)

I can understand how gaining , even a few pounds, makes you feel terrible.  But keep in perspective the following:

1) Beating yourself up is not the answer.  You gained weight.  It stings. It sucks. You feel bad about yourself. But keep in mind that the more you consider yourself a failure, the more you place yourself in a self fulfilling prophecy.  Think about the entire amount of WEIGHT you have lost over the past few years. Allow yourself some forgiveness.

2)  Skipping meals or only allowing yourself 1 or 2 meals is a double-edged sword.  First, by denying your body nutrition, it will STOP trying to lose weight by hanging on to what it already has. AND, you risk over-eating when you do allow yourself a meal.  *Notice-this is the pot calling the kettle black!*  Also,  your body will become weak, depressed, and even at *dis* ease. That will definately hold you back from pulling through this valley.

3) Don't be so hard on cows. They predict weather! (Okay, I really wrote that just make you giggle a bit)

4) It sounds like smoking was a way to calm you and make you feel better.  Is there something else you can replace the cigs with that will promote the same feelings?  Do you run? Enjoy golf? Play Wii or Sony? What about painting?  Can you think of something healthy that you can replace one behavior (smoking) for another?

And let's be honest... quitting smoking is hard as HELL!!! I know this because my husband has stopped and started a dozen times.  He lost 65lbs with diet and exercise a few years ago.  He was so proud of himself. Then, he stopped smoking and gained it all back.  It is an ongoing battle between weight and nicotine, so you are definately not alone.

Congrats on quiting smoking.  I know you don't feel good about the weight now but a 6lb gain is more tolerable than a future of lung disease.

Hang in there, my friend!

I'm going to join your bandwagon. Quit smoking in February and I've gained enough to feel it too. I hate it, so I'm striving to eat better and exercise more. But all in all, I guess I'd rather have healthy lungs than stress out about these 15 pounds.

Good luck,
Gisela

Chris, I would first like to applaud you for quitting smoking.  That is awesome.   I will not bash you, nor should anyone else.   You know...you have done wonderfully.  Honestly, I did not recognize you at the reunion.  I thought you were someone's spouse and did not realize you were you until later LOL.    (Your picture does not look like you.)  I don't know what to say other than I know you can take those pounds off.  Look at what a success you are.

My dear friend had a heart attack at 50 2 weeks ago and after 35 years, put her cigs down....I applaud you and know how hard it is!  Yes, you gained a few pounds--but when have you EVER in your life caught it at SIX POUNDS!!???  Usually we wait until it is 60 POUNDS.....I applaud you for catching it early.

Now, if moaning and groaning actually burned calories, I'd encourage you to keep it up!  HOWEVER....old fashioned eating less and burning more will fix the problem.....concentrate on all the success you've had in the past!  You are amazing, an inspiration, and a HUMAN....we fall off the wagon occasionally!  Now, get that bootie moving
