How to Be Thankful in Tough Times

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

*** *** *** ***

1. Don’t worry about anything. Worrying doesn’t change anything. It’s stewing without doing. There’s no such thing as born worriers; worry is a learned response. You learned it from your parents. You learned it from your peers. You learned it from experience. That’s good news. The fact that worry is learned means it can also be unlearned. Jesus says, “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today" (Matthew 6:34 NLT).

2. Pray about everything. Use the time you’ve spent worrying for praying. If you prayed as much as you worried, you’d have a whole lot less to worry about. Some people think God only cares about religious things, such as how many people I invite to church or my tithing. Is God interested in car payments? Yes. He’s interested in every detail of your life. That means you can take any problem you face to God.

3. Thank God in all things. Whenever you pray, you should always pray with thanksgiving. The healthiest human emotion is not love, but gratitude. It actually increases your immunities; it makes you more resistant to stress and less susceptible to illness. People who are grateful are happy. But people who are ungrateful are miserable because nothing makes them happy. They’re never satisfied; it’s never good enough. So if you cultivate the attitude of gratitude, of being thankful in everything, it reduces stress in your life.

4. Think about the right things. If you want to reduce the level of stress in your life, you must change the way you think. The way you think determines how you feel, and the way you feel determines how you act. So if you want to change your life, you need to change what you’re thinking about.

This involves a deliberate, conscious choice where you change the channels. You choose to think about the right things: focus on the positive and on God’s Word. Why? Because the root cause of stress is the way you choose to think.

When we no longer worry, when we pray about everything, when we give thanks, when we focus on the right things, the apostle Paul tells us the result is, “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7 NLT).

This is awesome Shirley!!!!  I learned many years ago when I was literally worrying myself sick, that God did not place a spirit of worry, fear, discontent or anything negative in my life or spirit.  He places within us a Spirit of Love, Joy, Peace and contentment.  He always meets our needs and more.    God is so AWESOME!!!!  Thank you for posting this.  Love you!!

Wonderful Post Shirley, it so easy in today time to worry, with bills, groceries cost, etc....  I try all the time not to worry... always remembering to put it in God's Hand...... in the past I find when I put it in God's hands it all works out... but if I try to keep it in mine, it gets worse.... So Let go and Let God

Thanks for the very timely reminder that instead of worrying, put our troubles in HIS hands and he will carry us forth.  I forget sometimes, but once I turn it over to God, my burden is always lifted.  He WILL provide.  Somehow, someway...it always works out in the end.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this post, it is excellent advice.  One thing that I have learned is taken from the life of Job.  God takes many things away from us to clear a path for something better to come.  It is really hard to see that when you are mourning the loss, but in the lng run it is true.  I do have to say that I think the exceptions to this are maybe the loss of a child or a parent, depending on the cir****tances.

Think about how many times you have lost a job, only to find a better one.  How many times you have had to tighten your belt financially, only to discover that when you got more money, you could save it or appreciate it more.   Even with my recent theft, I realize that I was not enjoying the things that I was keeping.  With fewer things, I am enjoying them more and appreciating the scarfice that it took to get them originally.  God even provided a way that much of the most important things to me were replaced with even better things.  The memories cannot be stolen, nor the love that created those memories.  Some things are safe within our hearts for eternity and can never be lost,    So whatever happens in these troubled times will eventually be for our betterment, but it does not mean that we will not experience loss and mourning in the coming year, it just means we may have to rely more on faith and courage to remain content with how life presents itself.

The scariest thing my mother and grandmother use to say was that God never gave us more than we could handle and that our hardships were to prepare us for what was to come.  I have found that to always be true...it just scares me sometimes that what I am going through is to prepare me for more of a challenge.
