Job Discrimination for Obese People
I'm watching a show on TLC called Big As Life about Obesity in America. There was a guy talking about obese people earning less than normal sized people and having more discrimination.
I remember getting a job one time and the woman was telling me how my resumé looked good, my job history and references were fantastic and my typing skills were wonderful and she added brightly, "and we like to hire chubby girls because they're more dependable."
I worked another time at a wellness center and when they hired me, I weighed 260. When they fired me, I weighed 260 and was told that, due to my weight, I was not a good role model for a wellness center.
Now all this was years and years ago. I would be finding me a GOOD lawyer if it happened today.
Anyway, I was just wondering about other people's experiences with this.
There was another person on this show I'm watching who said we should not diet because studies have shown that dieting only leads to more weight gain. This is true. I firmly believe all the dangerous things I did to lose weight in my younger years is part of my gaining the weight in the first place.
And I still believe the cyst on my pituitary gland has SOMETHING to do with my weight issues.
This show I'm watching is on TLC, channel 280 if you have DirecTV.
Happy New Year's everyone!

He said that his weight even though he is in great physical health and very actived..... his weight still gets in the way of getting a good job....
when I was working, one of the things I heard was I was not fast enough...and I always felt I ran circles around the others and I am good at what I do

what you have described is just a state of truth. fat people are considered lazy, unmotivated and dumb, as portraited on tv and movies. one thing i would consider is that being too fat can be dangerous in a job. what about assemblying a car for example. if a fat person were on the line and was too large to pick up something or had the risk to get a body part in a machine then that would could be dangerous. or the other side, what if a patient is dying and a fat paramedic or nurse could not get to the fast enough or fit around the bed to help or whatever. i see what you are saying and as a former fat person, i didnt like the idea that certain jobs i would like to have had i was not going to be hired. in fact, as a fat person and a gay woman, i would never be hired for some jobs.
i just learned to find my place in life and get over the what ifs and sue sue sue mentality of this nation. just my opinion

Well, you're right about that too. I've never tried to get a job doing something where my weight would be a detriment. And I was fast before I got arthritis and fibromyalgia.
I resented getting fired for my weight in a secretarial position where I was hired at the same weight. The people there wanted to hire one of their friends...someone in one of the bigwig's sorority so they were just looking for an excuse and they couldn't find anything wrong with my performance so they just tackled my looks. Most of the jobs I have done, I have been praised and praised for my performance...partly because I am OCD and I simply must be perfect or I will die trying.
I'm not really advocating suing everyone because I hate the sue sue mentality of this nation myself. However, the only way we are going to educate people about this disease is sometimes to hold people accountable for their actions. Oh, I don't know.
I just want everyone to love and appreciate me wherever I go.
I'm still trying to find my place in life. I fear I will go to my grave without finding it though....oh well...that's a story for another day and something to work towards in the New Year. Luckily for me, I am getting over the desire to have everyone like me. They're not gonna. But then again, there are those I don't like either.
Thanks for your opinion. That's what I wanted....
Prejudice in all its forms is a sad thing, but no matter what strides we make...it continues.
